OK TO PUT AN AREA RUG ON AN AREA RUG?

It took me 6 months to find this rug for my Family Room. The largest size it comes in is 8 x 10, which is what I have. I would like to keep it and put another larger area rug (12 x 14 in a light gold or beige) under it.......the room is too big for an 8 x 10. Has anyone done this??

I’d put painters tape on the floor where the new rug would be and see if a larger rug would make sense with the way your furniture is arranged.

You can look for color-bound sea grass rugs or something similar at Pottery Barn or overstock.com which will blend well with your chair and drapes and be a neutral backdrop for your carpet.

For a lot of years I had rugs over carpet....the amount of crawl depends on a lot. One the direction the nap on the carpet lays, the direction of travel through the room and the lay of the rug and how you vacuum. Eventually, I bit the bullet, tore up the carpet and refinished and repaired the floors....and still the rugs creep. The one in the dining room always goes one way....leading me to believe people walk faster from the dining room to the living room than to the kitchen. the living room rug never moves....but the one in the family room always moves east.... Well....after all it IS an Oriental!

Leah I'm guessing you looked at the pix in my link on gillianma's thread? It showed a couple of examples, and as I said, I will have more in my article on Wed, including persian rugs over sisal. Most rugs over sisal are done to either (a) achieve a look or (b) to create a "safe zone" area for spills and/or foot traffic. Personally, I would be hesistant to place a Karastan (and I love Karastans--I've praised them a lot in the past) simply because most are pretty thick and will end up looking heavy and off balance on a sisal--especially since you mention a larger (8x10) sized Karastan. Considering the excellent quality Karastans are known for, in this case you would be better served investing in the larger size.

The piano is definitely problematic. If the rug stretches to the piano, I'm worried the whole room will feel too carpeted, for lack of a better description. I was thinking of shortening the length to just before the start of the piano?

I agree with Ingrid—a nice sisal would work, except I’d skip the contrasting binding.

And to answer your question about whether or not anyone’s done this, my brother & his partner have—more out of necessity than anything else (kind of like you, I guess!) They live in a pre-war co-op building in NYC with terrific, original-but-noisy-for-the-neighbor-below-you hardwoods, and each apartment is required to have a minimum percentage of the flooring covered so they did exactly what you’re considering in both their living and dining rooms. And it looks great!

oaktonmom the room is 42 x 36....very large.....the rug looks so small. I want a bigger footprint to anchor the room.
