The best protection from malware and viruses is careful internet use - don't go to dangerous sites and don't click on links you don't know. The good security products will warn and even intervene if you get close to danger.

I generally used the free version but I won a paid version for life from them. I rarely use windows these days though. Malwarebytes is still one of the very best products for malware removal. The paid version helps to keep the malware from installing in the first place.

thanks for the info Elmer, i will look into them!! the pop-ups were actually on Garden Web/Houzz. it was the only site that "Mac Mechanic" would pop-up. so i hope its not a dangerous site or one that is open to viruses.
