Google Desktop Email Search

Hello All,

I have a Dell laptop XPS15 running Windows 7 and OE 6. I have been using the Google Desktop Search for Emails for years, and have never had a problem until now. We have a bed and breakfast so I use this to search old emails of guests, but recently I've noticed that whenever I type in the name there are no email results at all. To double check I thought I would type in a name of someone of someone I have been writing for years, and when I searched that name again NO email results.

Finally I opened the "Index Status" and the report says it has performed 36,450 searchs but listed no email searches. I then checked to make sure that I had marked that particular box when setting up this program, and it was checked. I'm completely confused. Wonder if anyone has had this happen or can tell me what may be going on.

have you tried using the search feature in your actual email client instead? When I search my email I always use the dedicated search feature of that email program.
which email client are you using?

Thanks Ravencajun for your reply. No, I've never done that. I'm so used to the Google feature which has worked flawlessly for years. Never thought to use the email search. I'll have to find it. I've got Microsoft Outlook 2010.

Raven, I read about Spicebird on Kim Komando's site and downloaded the setup file to a flash drive using my desktop computer. When I went to install on the Windows 7 machine, it would not install, indicating I had a corrupt download. So I just downloaded Thunderbird directly and used it a good part of today. I haven't quite figured out everything about it, but it is working for me and all three of my web mail programs are working with it. I guess I'll look for a good tutorial and make sure I have everything set up correctly. I think there are some add ons available, too. It certainly beats Windows Live Mail.

mudlady - If these devices still function but you're reluctant to use them because they have now un-updated Windows XP, I say.....go ahead and use them. As long as they have a solid antivirus/security system with an updated and active firewall, I think there's little to no risk of having a problem from surfing to known and legit websites, nor from the possibility of an intrusion coming up your internet connection. When googling for information, be careful not to click through to sites of unknown provenance. Also, I'd turn the devices off when not in use. Others will surely disagree, maybe they'll post and explain why.

Google is always changing various aspects so perhaps that feature has been suspended. Why not copy all your possibly needed emails into a word processor and save them yourself? A simple folder created with sub folders if you feel the need for sorting and saving them. Each file might only be a couple of kilobytes each so the overall space needed is very small.

Jane may well be right as Google had stated long ago that they would associate advertising with their products. Advertising has made them very rich. However in this case I would try to be sure. Now might be a good time to update and run a full anti virus scan and any anti malware programs you are running. Run at least 2 anti malware programs seeing you feel compromised. One might do but for myself when I feel in doubt I use 2 because at times these programs can find slightly different things. Update each anti malware program then run it when you will be away from the computer for perhaps 90 minutes, you do not need to sit watching, it will create a report at the end of the scan.

Hi Ravencajun,

I just did the search using my email program, or at least the search field at the top of header, and guess what----it uses Google Desktop, so again no results. Said "0" results. Again, to double check I entered a name that I had just received, and still turned up a no result. Strange.

you likely set up google desktop as the default which is why now oyur Outlook is using it to search, you should be able to change that setting in your outlook so it uses a different search option.

Hi Ravencajun,

I'll check these links. May not make any difference, but the reason I've loved the Google desktop is that it checks back years into past emails. Since I've only had this new Microsoft 2010 program for 1 year, I don't know if it could search back as far as I'd like. Not sure how that works.

I've checked the Google forums before (no easy task, believe me.), but will try again. Maybe re-loading it will do the trick.
