Well, I noticed little brown bugs on some things on the patio, and then noticed them on a couple of brugs which just made the trip from the patio to the ground. I sprayed with the murphy oil soap / alcohol recipe and added a tablespoon of perioxide that someone else suggested. Just to be safe, I also got some bayer systemic plant food and insecticide for roses and flowering plants and applied that according to package recommendations (to be done once every 6 weeks). So far so good. I've been watching because I'm going to follow-up with more oil soap in a few more days but so far I don't see anything. I had such a hard time last summer with aphids and spider mites, I am so happy to have finally caught on to systemics! Hopefully they will work this good all summer!

This is done pretty often, especially in apartments and condos where the signal is strong from one residence to another because people are close together. I guess, technically, if they were to download or connect to something illegal it could come back on the person paying for the connection, but if it's a temporary situation just until they get their own services hooked up, I'd have no problem with it, myself, given that he knows the people and they're decent. I probably wouldn't do it on a permanent basis just on the principle that they should pay for their own services, but many people do this as an ongoing thing and there is essentially no way it can be found out. Who's to say whether the extra users are neighbors or simply guests in his own apartment? But again, if it were me I'd let them do it only temporarily and then change the WiFi password after she gets her own services connected. She may be trustworthy but if he leaves the password the same and someone else gets his password they could purposely use his connection to do things they wouldn't do over their own connection, such as download movies illegally, which could put him at risk of legal action or having his internet connection cut off.

As Christopher said, there is a middle ground between a set of trees manicured with ongoing herbicide and acres of lawn. We mow a chunk of our property as lawn, have several large shrub and tree borders 15’-20’ deep, and maintain other areas as rough field which have some trees, and keep other areas as woodlands . The field areas get mowed after the ground nesting birds have hatched and then about now after the grasses have seeded and are fading. We do use a bit of herbicide in the field on persistent woody invasives like buckthorn and bittersweet, as well as on poison ivy, but in general, just seasonal mowing takes care of woodies by not allowing them to become established. As long as you aren’t trying to maintain the look of a manicured lawn, mowing around trees isn’t an issue at all. The issue with removing all grass across a large area is that nature abhors a vacuum, and even the densest mulch will slow but not stop plants growing, not only woody plants such as native oaks and hickories, but also invasives and various herbaceous plants. You will be spending quite a bit of time for the first 10-15 years while the trees size up and the area still has a good amount of sun spraying herbicide, not a choice I would make. Also, if there is any slope at all, having bare ground covered with pine needles can leave you with massive erosion problems. You can start by planting a thick band of trees with an understory of large shrubs, well mulched, perhaps 15 feet deep and see how the maintenance works for that before committing to removing more lawn. The reason most folks have lawn rather than other plantings in the eastern half of the US is because it is the easiest to maintain.
