Thanks, pkponder! I called Toshiba as you advised and was told that the hardware was covered for 1 year. I have to find the receipt and then contact the warranty department on Monday to make arrangements to send it in to Toshiba. Thanks again.

From what you've described, my reactions are: The program you're using (Secunia) is unnecessary. I wouldn't spend another second using it or opening it. Programs update themselves. Driver Restorer sounds like a come on, I'd delete it and pay no further attention to it. If a driver needs updating, the periodic update sessions from MS will handle it. If your PC is working adequately with its hardware, the topic of drivers can be ignored. Java has nothing to do with the display's general performance. Maybe some part of the screen or what controls it is failing? Is your PC going into some kind of a sleep cycle, does the screen brighten if you touch a key? Maybe you should take the PC to a repair shop or replace it if it's old?

Hi Genes, thanks so much for your reply. No, haven't hooked it up to another monitor, and if truth be told, I do have another laptop on the way. This one is 4 years old. I'm also the gal who has the problem of the connection switching from electric to battery while connected----so I'm limping along and just waiting for my new one to arrive. ritaweeda, I think Brushwork was advising that you remove McAfee if you've installed Norton's. Having two Active Anti-Virus Programs on a computer isn't a good thing. They usually end up fighting with each other thinking the other is a virus. Download the McAfee Removal Tool and run it. Windows Defender is included with Windows 10. It's not Microsoft's intension to stop you from purchasing a Good Anti-Virus product such as Norton's. Windows Defender will Disable itself if it detects another active anti-virus program such as Norton's, McAfee, etc... Microsoft's intension was to make sure Everyone had some kind of Basic Virus Protection. Many people think they don't need or just don't know they need an Anti-Virus Program. Microsoft is making sure these people are somewhat protected, keeping the rest of us a just bit safer! From what I've read, Microsoft Defender is a little better than Microsoft Essentials. I'm not exactly sure of the differences, you'd have to do some research on that one yourself!
