Comments (12)My youngest tree, the Kent, only in the ground 20 months, was the first with panicles this year ! Ah yes, lookin' forward to some Kents in July,..my favorite tasting mango ! More Kent panicles ! It's now officially the start of the 2019 Florida mango season ! It's surprising how this time of year gets me so enthused ! There are only a few places in the US where mangos will grow, I feel fortunate to live in one of them ! The panicles I have been photographing will start to set fruit soon and now begins the much slower and selective phase of this cycle. I have already given my pals, the flies, wasps and bees permission to begin the pollinating process. Then, the tiny yellow flowers and soon after the baby fruits will evolve ! A process that always psychs me out ! There may be 10 to 50 tiny fruits that set on each panicle but as time passes many, if not all, will drop ! But, as in the past, there will be so many panicles on these four robust young trees that a harvest of 200 + mangos from the big Glenn alone is a real possibility this June ! A Yankee and his fruit trees ! LOL However, I am well aware that this windfall will not be a total walk in the park ! The critters will get their share. Am sure they'll start sneaking around in another 6 weeks or so. Have been there before, - last year was a first when the spiny-tailed iguanas came a-calling, along with the squirrels, wabbits, etc ! I do hope they've all learned their lesson, but if I have to go nose-to-nose with them again, so be it ! It's all worthwhile at harvest time, which here will run from early June thru late August. C'mon tough guys, I'm ready !!! :o)...See MoreOh Happy Day. Anyone have it?
Comments (11)Hi pink! Glad you brought this back up. My OHD sat ALL summer. It grew a few leaves but wouldn't bloom. It finally gave me a few flowers in October! When it did bloom they were gorgeous though. I'm hoping it was just taking time to settle in and grow roots. Maybe it will then take off and bloom this spring! I can say the plant was pretty healthy but we'll see how well it winters....See MoreOh Happy Day....is it just another rose or something special?
Comments (2)Thanks for the input, Rifis. By now, enough years after its release, Oh Happy Day should have acquired some evaluations by its owners, good or bad. My main concern is its black spot resistance/immunity. The blooms, going by photos I've seen, seem to have a nice color and form, little quilling ( to me, quilling, except when the petal count is high, is not a desirable flower trait). Will see how the comments go. Was thinking of wrapping up my black spotter elimination project this season, with only 3-4 spotter bushes to go. These last ones are real annoyances....can't wait to see them gone, and for other, non spotting reasons also. However, the intense heat, drought conditions currently developing as of 6-27, and My spine surgery scheduled for 7-11-22, may make me want to wait until spring '23. I already replaced 9 or so bushes this year so far so m at the end of the project. The bed looks a bit wonky now, with so many young bushes, but the end product will hopefully be easier to care for and be far more enjoyable. Moses...See MoreLarri
