A different kind of Thanksgiving prep....

The meal is planned. I will do my part the day before, making the dishes requested of me at my sisters house for her to heat up the next day. So now i can turn my attention to a much more fun Thanksgiving activity: my Christmas decor at work. I am working every night this week, including Thanksgiving. I usually put the decorations up Thanksgiving night, but this year i may start the night before. Depends on my mood i guess.I asked my boss to take down one of each size ceiling tile so that i could pre-cut the wrapping paper i will use to cover all of them,which he did. That's done (with no duplicates!) I have placed all of those removable sticky hook things everywhere where i will need them, and have checked/repaired all of my light strings. Now all i have to do is put up painters tape on the walls and doors, so that when i wallpaper them with different wrapping paper, the gorilla tape i use won't damage the paint. I think that is everything that i can do ahead of time. Still need to pick up some more wrapping paper for the walls,doors, file cabinets, and fridge, some tinsel, and maybe some of those window cling things. Oh and some candy canes for treats. And more lights. And whatever the heck else i see that i like and want and have to have. (I don't have a PROBLEM!!!!) I also have all of the outdoor decor and extension cords that i took home that will need to be brought back up to work, but that's no problem. The projector that i will use to play various Christmas movies is working well, though the screen could use some ironing and adjusting, and i seem to have misplaced my ELF DVD. No matter...I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!

Hello Marie Thanks for the compliments. I luv my kitchen. :) There are 8 cams in main kitchen area. As you can see in the first pic above, they are centered over the island and the walkway areas, so the spacing was dictated by those dimensions in the kitchen. I think they are 6" - but truthfully, I just told the electrician how many cams I wanted and they did the rest. The only choice he asked me about was the baffles and I chose white to make them blend in better with the white ceiling. They supplied them so I don't know the manufacturer. I have absolutely no glare - just lots of glorious light when I want it. Most of the time I just use the ones over the island, but I can really light things up if I want to! I suppose I am not really answering your spacing questions very well, am I? :) I would advise that it would be best to have more lighting than you think you may need ... you can always turn lights off or not use them ... but if you don't have enough, it's miserable. Been there, done that. :) I love my potfiller and use it constantly - even more so than I thought I would. It is a worthwhile luxury for me and I am sooooo glad I have it. It is a Kohler. HTH, MaryT

Okay, we're back on track! We had a good workday on Saturday, and knocked off a few lingering projects. First, we put in the desk area stuff. We took your earlier advice and pulled the upper cabinet away from the back wall by 6", but that added a lot of complexity in fastening it, as it had to be screwed to the side walls. We had to build up about 1.5" on either side, so we did it with plywood and some shaved-down pieces of a pallet. It looked like this: We got the wall cabinet screwed in, and the desk placed (at counter height), but not fastened yet, because I can't remember how far from the back wall I told the granite guy to go with the counter. So we'll wait to do the final front-to-back positioning until he brings the slabs back. I still need to add the fillers and the crown to the wall cabinet, but I'm using the filler around the tambour, and need to use it there first, and use the remnants on the desk. DH worked for 4 hours on the island electrical. We mused, discussed, and brainstormed to figure out what to do on this. We've got decorative panels everywhere, so an outlet in the middle would detract from that. Plug mold (our original idea) would have required one side of the island counter to be a couple inches more overhand, plus it would cover up the top of the decorative doors. So our KD (thanks, Dan!) had this idea: It's unobtrusive and simple in concept, but to execute my DH not only had to drill the holes in the precise place in the 3/8" plywood skin, but then chisel out a rectangular area behind it, so the outlet could be flush with the outside of the plywood. Whew! We've got one on either side of the center panel, and the entire island is shown here in the finished shot. I also did the penninsula trim: more plywood, decorative door panels, and corner bead. We're waiting by the phone with bated breath for our granite guy to call saying they're ready to bring it. They did send us photos of the template, so we know they've got our slabs. Here's one (sorry, don't know how to make it bigger). And our backordered drawer handles should finally be here on Monday.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately they're not what I'm hoping may exist somewhere (perhaps it doesn't). Compumom, the Beard recipe I modified was the one for apricot bread in Beard on Bread, substituting persimmons for the apricots and their soaking water, as I described in my original post. I've made the Beard persimmon bread recipe you reference as well, reducing the sugar and using half oil half butter in place of the butter: the results were excellent, but too sweet and too fat for my current taste. Irisgal, your recipe is sweeter than what I want. Perhaps fruit breads require that much sugar, or almost: I know sugar can be cut to 3/4 cup, because I often do that myself, but don't know if can be reduced to 1/4 cup as I attempted, and which didn't work. I like a fruit bread for breakfast or as a snack, but since I had flu almost a year ago, my already moderate taste for sweetness has diminished almost to zero. For the last few years even plain apples have been borderline too sweet. Hence my interest in a bread with little added sugar.

I'm keeping Thanksgiving low key this year. Thursday meal will be just me, DH and our daughter. They have simple tastes so no need to go overboard. Frozen turkey has almost defrosted after being in frig four days, so that's good to roast tomorrow. Bought a bag of cranberries today. We will have turkey, gravy, cornbread, baked potatoes, broccoli (plain steamed), and cranberry sauce. Daughter might make us a pecan pie when she arrives tomorrow. We're already planning a turkey soup & sandwich leftover meal with the rest of my family here in town, and then with DH's family a few hours south. Today I bought a frozen turkey breast to ensure we have enough leftovers to share :-)

Yes! That is my goal! We work 12 hour shifts here. If you're gonna be here for 12 hours, you might as well have some fun at Christmas time!

I will say though I do feel bad sometimes. One year, the office staff announced a door decorating contest........

Now in my DEFENSE, not only do i NOT consider myself office personnel (I am not classified as such, even though i work in an office), and not only did i not ask to be entered into it (the queen does not dance with peasants, after all....KIDDING), but my decorations were up and operational weeks before any "door decoration" contest was mentioned. Now, the ladies who organized it were certainly more than happy to not consider me, they never even asked. But there was a plant wide outrage when it was known that they were not considering my decorations for the contest. So they came over, took some blurry pictures, and made some catty remark about being too tacky for THEM to work around everyday. (not sure if they were referring to me or the decor. :) Don't care either way )Needless to say, i crushed them all and there hasn't been a decorating contest since, even though i offered to exclude myself from it. Sore LOSERS!!! They do have an ugly Christmas sweater contest that maybe 5 people enter. (myself NOT included)

I am usually itching to decorate for Christmas too. This year we have a snag. My son got himself engaged so we are hosting the future in-laws the day after Thanksgiving, then the bride tells me she wants us all to go dress shopping Saturday. The week-end after turkey it takes me a solid 14 hours to get my house set. I have 25 nativity sets to put up!!! Doing it piece meal means living in a MESS for days..not my style but since I do't have kids at home anymore I guess DH and I could deal. I will set the men to doing the outside decor while we shop....it will work just not on my preferred time line!!! I have my classroom decorations ready to go up too!! I have to wait until after finals....patience isn't my thing in this area!!
