Painting Kitchen Cabinets - Cabinet Coat vs. Oil Based
Comments (4)Last week on Ask This Old House (the episode which played in my area, I mean) they helped a homeowner paint her kitchen cabinets. The professional painter TOH brought in (one they've used on various projects) said he recommends against using oil-based in a kitchen for two reasons: 1) it yellows over time, and if you're going to spend a lot of time doing the prep and painting, you want your paint to stay true, and 2) the fumes are just too strong for a kitchen, a space which needs to be used sooner rather than later, and by various members of a family. He and the homeowner primed, used two - three coats of the (water-based) paint and then two coats of poly over. In our den we used (I mean, the painters used) Cabinet Coat on the cabinets, and it is different than "usual" paint. In our kitchen (on wainscoting) we used BM's (water-based) Impervo and honestly, I like its finish better than the Cabinet Coat. They've both stood up beautifully, although in all fairness the Impervo gets much more of a workout than the CC (I've four and two year-olds) and we scrub it on a frequent basis. No burnishing, no color wiping up. It's really great. Over neither did we put poly. Do check the Painting Forum -- there are so many smart and generous people there. Good luck with your project!...See MorePainting kitchen cabinets
Comments (11)I wouldn't paint the cabinets. I think they're really nice-looking, and I like the dark countertop with them for the contrast. I would update the backsplash, either remove the tile and paint the area above the 4" countertop splash, or remove both the existing tile and the 4" backsplash and pick out a new backsplash tile. You might also think about changing out the kitchen floor to something like a slate-look tile in a neutral charcoal tone to coordinate with the counters, or run in some hardwood. But really it's the backsplash area that needs the work, IMO....See MoreWhat primer, paint, lacquer to use for painting kitchen cabinets,
Comments (8)Thank you for your comments guys. After further research I evaluated the options and it was between extreme durability or safer for the environment and health option. Apparently many of you may know lacquer is very toxic because of the very high VOC. Even if painted outside which it should always be the case but even later after drying it continues to release toxins in the air for the next 6 months or more. Who knew it has such affect on us even aftet drying. For example Kemvar Conersion Varnish is what my cabinet/painter wanted to use because it is very durable but very high on VOC. I think i will go with Paint from SW primer and paint coat as a healthier and safer option. I rather compromise durability vs health but i sure hope paint will hold good too on cabinets. Thank you...See Moreideas for painting kitchen cabinets
Comments (10)Any of those warranties are for the original purchaser so lifetime of them so no warranty here for sure. I agree 10k will get you a finish that might not even last the 10 yrs you. I have no idea why anyone would prefer to get on their hands and knees to access lower cabinet storage when drawers are so accessible .BTW any cabinet made in China might ahve a warranty but try to use it you will need to pay the shipping to China to get any kind of action so IMO buyer beware . A lifetime warranty is only as good as the maker wants it to be . Just read the disclaimers normal wear and tear is not covered ....See Moresuseyb
