October 2014 how does your garden grow?
Comments (26)Thanks raimeiken, glad you like the amaryllis. I got it as a single radish-sized bulb in 2000. It's actually in a large pot although you can't see it from the pics, I just noticed. I've split it several times and love to share it out. It's slow to get established but once it settles in it just grow and blooms and grows and blooms. Awesome new pics, Kevin--you grow a lot of really great plants. I love all of the brickwork too. Nice captions/narrative too. Thanks for taking the time to post all of the pics! Just for fun, here's a quick pic along the east side of the house: And a fun six-pointed stapelia seedling from my hand pollination of stapelias (S. grandiflora x S. gigantea). It's not super unusual to get an occasional 6 pointed flower instead of the usual 5 pointed ones, but it's still fun when it happens. Some leaf lettuce seedlings, and ferociously-blooming "Mexican heather" (Cuphea hyssopifolia) along with some I'itoi bunching onions in my little round veggie bed. Happy gardening all, keep the updates coming! Grant...See MoreDid I miss 2014 cooking and eating goals?
Comments (27)Now that my son is solidly into eating "proteins" other than chicken nuggets/pizza/hot dogs (was that last year or the year before's goal?), I will work on starches, seems easier than veggies. He even went to the Men's Steak Out event and ate steak recently! He called me during dinner to say he loved it. I consider that obstacle knocked to the ground. While we don't make or buy red meat, he'll even eat that? Done! He eats only bread with his protein/fruits/veggies... LOTS of bread. I have to bring that down to something more reasonable and I think I can wean him a bit with maybe a potato or rice then move on to beans or lentil types of foods. He's a mystery in the food arena! I'd love to expand beyond peas and carrots, but at least they're green and orange veggies....See MoreDiff. between Cooks Illustrated & Cooks Country
Comments (7)Each of them also has its own electronic version which gives you access to the current print issue and all preceding issues. As much as I enjoy having hard copies in hand, I've subscribesd to the the CI electronic version for a couple of years. As part of that online subscription, of course, I also receive the many advertisements that go along with it, including one at the end of each year for that year's issues in a bound volume PLUS the previous year's bound volume. So, if I can hold off for a while, I still get all the paper copies. Hey, if they're going to give me the choice, I'll take it!...See MoreHow do you dispose of your cooking grease?
Comments (70)A water condition caused the backup, pushing human waste into about 300 homes in Jamaica, Queens, officials said. ... Officials have a culprit in mind: cooking grease that’s been poured down the drain. It tends to congeal into big masses that slow or stop the flow of sewage, leaving it no place to go but back up the pipes. In some places around the world , the grease balls have gotten so enormous they’ve been described as “fatbergs.” “This time of year we get a lot of grease blockages in sewers from residents that discharge grease," city environmental protection chief Vincent Sapienza told reporters. “We’re under the assumption that it’s that.” https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/sewer-line-backs-queens-pushing-waste-300-homes-67409595...See More- 5 years ago
