I think the 'Beach Lady from Galveston' you refer to is our beloved and exuberant Tally, who unfortunately passed away quite suddenly in March. We still feel the void she left. There are photos and videos of her on the link.

I'm so sorry to hear that Tally passed. She was a lovely person.

I started becoming interested in plants and joined GardenWeb about 12 years ago. At that time I had an office job and hated it. There is a long story... I decided life is too short to hate your work... quit my job... travelled and worked at different State and National Parks... did some conservation work... every time I came across a new plant I had to look it up and learn about it. I still love learning new things about plants. This world is so diverse; there will always be more to learn. Now I work at a plant nursery and although the pay is terrible compared to my old office job, I enjoy my work. Customers often ask me how I learned so much about plants and I always just say I like plants so I started researching them on the internet to learn more.

My front yard (a work in progress; I just bought the place 2 years ago and it was all weeds), the butterfly garden, and one of my favorite cacti: curly epiphyllum who is in the garage during this cold weather. As you can probably tell; I really love epiphytic cacti!

Thank you for filling us in on your adventure from an office job to plant nursery. Good choice. I'd take being outside any old day. In fact, I worked at a neighborhood nursery in San Antonio for a couple of years. It was so close to my home I could ride a bicycle to work. The only downside is I spent most of my salary on plants which the owner discounted for employees ... :-)

I love seeing your yard photos. You've done a lot in two years. Love your house, those big hanging baskets, flowing flower beds and selection of plants!

Wow -- that curly epiphyllum with pink flowers is to die for! I've NEVER seen anything like that ! Gorgeous!

I have a soft spot for that type of epi. Ragna, I was giving some of those Epiphyllum guatamalense var monstrose away at the swap. I can save you a cutting or three. They are great. The pink is fruit not flowers. Their flowers are not that distinctive but the fruit hangs around for awhile and they make a fair amount of fruit. You can see the dried flowers hanging down..
