Linux choice for naive user

I'm using Windows 10 now on a basic HP desktop and would like to experiment with a Linux OS. I don't need a lot of speed (no gaming) and mostly just browse the internet. I don't even have any mobile devices I want to connect up with. I mean, I still use a flip phone and yes, I still have a real rotary dial phone on the wall. But I'm tired of all the stuff Windows seems to want to hook me up with, and I don't want Windows to impose stuff on me. I suspect Microsoft of deliberately making conflicts with my Firefox browser. Make sense?

I used Kubuntu a few years ago on a deceased laptop and liked it just fine. I'm also reading that Mint is a good system and wonder about Lubuntu. But my main concern is that I've read that installing a new OS while keeping all my old files is not something a casual user should undertake.

So educate me, please! Thanks.
