If you don't mind damaging your wall, you need to get mirror mastic and glue it up where you want it. Mirror mastic won't remove the silvering on the back of a mirror. Even at that, given the weight and size of the mirror, I'd want to hang it with mirror clips or frame it so it's well supported. Being on the wall like that, and that large, I don't think you want it to tilt as it could be distorting. Flat on the wall is best....at least that's how they're mounted in the room where I have barre class.

On pure aesthetics the lower example pleased my eye more, and then I read your post! Imagine that .... I'll tell you what would please my eye even more -- being able to see myself! (vanity, thy name is ME) I think it's a more interesting composition having the mirror lower, and I think it's even more interesting if you're able to see yourself. But scrolling back up and reading others responses I am just one in a long line who feels this way. How do you feel? And on a totally different topic, I am so envious of your grand piano. I play exceedingly poorly and I've lived without a piano for years, but a girl can dream .... My two year-old has recently discovered the piano (at a little play class we take together), and watching him tickle (okay, pound) the ivories made me emotional. (I'm studying the banjo and already the two year-old makes prettier sounds on it than I!) So with your outdoor fireplace and your indoor piano I am going to live vicariously through you! amysrq, my hero!

I believe mirrors started being used as wall hangings when the intent was to "double" another view, say the outdoors through a window or double doors. So if what is reflected on your mirror is juist ceiling, maybe it wasn't the best wall hanging choice. Oh, but they make them so pretty these days, they are hard to resist. Yours is def. gorgeous. Back to mirror orientation, I didn't realize that you were planning on adding light sconces. And why would you do that? b/c you need to fill up lateral space. Precisely the reason why placed horizontally has been so popular here. It fills up the space that needs to be filled. Additionally, with that pretty, blingy chandy, won't sconces be distracting? You seem to have pretty sleek, non-cutesy taste. I think sconces might be too much, esp. if you don't need extra illumination.

IMO you have enough pictures of scenery in the stained glass. You don't need an eagle over the fireplace. I would 86 the armoire in the corner. It takes up too much room to simply house the TV and cable box. Get a simple corner stand to free up some space in the room. I am suggesting something rustic over your fireplace but with some curves. Also I'm not sure you have the best arrangement for this room considering it looks like to have to take a bus to reach the coffee table.
