There are lots of things to consider with window coverings. First would be function: does the room need privacy? Darkening treatments for sleeping? Are they going to be opened and closed every day or remain mostly stationary? It doesn't matter how great they look if they do not meet the needs of the room. In terms of aesthetics, it could be important for you to consider how things look on the outside of the house, depending upon how formal the house is, how it is situated to the street, etc. The house I grew up in had white sheers on all first floor windows, including the garage, for a uniform look. Having sheers in the garage is actually really practical since they can be thrown in the wash and hung up damp. The upstairs front windows also presented a white face to the street but windows that couldn't be seen as much varied with their treatments more. If the treatment is going to be closed a lot, color is a consideration as is translucency. If you need privacy during the day, you may not want to have to turn the lights on if you close the window treatment, and if it Does let light in, a colored treatment could create a cast you don't care for too much. (You may not want a blue or maroon sheer if it casts too much blue or maroon tint into the room for example). Other aspects as formality of the room, function of the room and practicality of care are also important.

Just heard from Archy! Got the preliminary drawings for all 3 levels...here's the main level. I LOVE how he dealt with the entry/my office area/pantry. We were going round & round. I NEEDED better access to one freezer I access all the time & didn't want it in the pantry with the other one. My desk (to the right of the freezer) is in a perfect area - just the right location upon entering - just dump & dash :) Deal with later. We needed the entry to the greenhouse from there to give us 2 layers of entry to the deck because of heat loss & bears. Next to the entry closet will be bins & more storage for boots, outdoor gear, stuff like that. We'll have doors so it won't look messy. I heard the bells rings when I saw this so I'm pretty sure this is a go! So hard when you only have so much room to work with & a fierce winter climate that is working against you. :) Thanks for all your input & help.

Hey There: the best way to update your rooms is with battery operating remote controlled roller shades. The roller shades go up to 160 inches in width, the batteries have a life time of about 5000 to 7000 circles and are shelf DD batteries - so there is no expensive replacement. The installation is easy as a manual roller shade...no costly hard wiring and installation is needed...all shades are pre-programmed from the German manufacturer...
