Planting a new tree on top of old
Comments (14)I'm confused. I've been told repeatedly (and read) that with root rot from the "water mold?" phytoria, that the spores remain in the ground and wait for susceptible hosts then attack. Then I'm told in places where this occurs, NOT to replant with anything susceptible... even if drainage is increased, etc. When it's in your whole yard, then I'm stuck... I see things very prone to root rot (hydrangeas, viburnums, etc) growing in the woods and think surely there's been phytoria there?? But then I'm told by arborist I can't plant fringe trees, etc as they aRE (and have been damaged) and seven sons, viburnums, etc b/c if/when they contact any diseased wood deeper in ground or spores that can be airborn or water, even if planted high with much better drainage, they'll succumb.. Obviously, tearing up the yard and ammending, etc stirs eveything up and then I'm told not to plant anything except highly resistant and even then wait, longer is better... It doesn't make sense, is it true that these trees I love (and have in pots, though some suffering through rot from being attackted by nearby thing) won't live if they survive their pot time/recovery? obviously, heavy clay soil, overwatering are out for some things, but... other areas where trees were lost from the disease but old roots still remain deep and lethal?? Reportedly with mobilizing their spores?? Please PLEASE help me make sense of this?? As I dig deep to break up clay, etc I still find the black or red/yucky remains of stuff, and like it or not, it's impossible to keep quaranteed.. Comments (8)My old house (built around 1850) has a concrete slab floor in the basement and rock walls. We live in a swamp area, except we live in the highest point in the neighborhood ! (HAHA! those smart people!) When we bought the house I carefully went around it and made sure the grading was appropriate and fixed it where it wasn't. The only time we have problems now is when a gutter clogs. Then we go out and fix it and we are just fine. The gutters really do their job at keeping the basement dry however you need to keep up their maintanance. Once after a big rainstorm we found a nice river in the basement. We found that one of the gutter downspouts had clogged and all the water was just running into a huge hole the water had drilled next to the foundation. We fixed everything up and havent' had the same problem since. We also have a dehumidifier and a sump pump (that never kicks on but is there for emergencies! ) We will NEVER be able to store things like fabric or paper in our basement. That is just the way it is, however it sure is perfect for wine and canned goods!!! -renee...See MoreLaying new granite top over old laminated surface
Comments (11)I've decided that installing the new granite right over the existing laminate is a pretty sound and logical choice. No one has yet to comment about those of us who have had 3/4" thick oak hardwood installed, therefore robbing us of that same 3/4" of counter height. Believe it or not, it does make a notable difference in the comfort level, especially in the lower back after working there for some time. By installing directly over the laminate we gain back that 3/4" of counter height within 1/16". I'm convinced that if the laminate is level it will serve as perhaps the best choice, that is provided there is no moisture damage. Needless to say, the savings will be substantial and I can't think of any better overall support. The sink issue is not an issue if you know what you're doing, nor is the plumbing and the garbage disposal anything that can't be easily overcome. We have decided to carefully cut the front and side nosings off the existing laminate top by the same amount that the new granite nosing will hang over. I'm planning the same for our island with a gas cooktop. There is plenty of slack in the flexible gas line and the adjustability of the downdraft pipe. Once again, by measuring carefully, the cut-out should not be a problem. What am I missing here?...See MoreAdding new decking on top of old damage decking during roof repair
Comments (1)"This is because mobile homes use 2x3 or 2x2 for roof support and he doesn't want to risk damaging those. He also states this will make the roof stronger." My thinking this is easier for him. Why is it damaged? New decking on top of old will also make it heavier. Can your roof handle the additional weight?...See Moredan1888
