Ceiling fans: is the difference worth the difference? [vote!]
Comments (26)Thanks for the info about Hunters. I'll keep looking for them. I've bought Casablanca in the past, via ebay like others mentioned, but if Hunter original is just as good, I'd rather do that since I have a bunch of fans to buy. FWIW, I'm with the OP - I like the first fan, but like the glass in the second one better! Any chance they look different in "real life?" Like maybe the first one has more amber-colored glass when it's lit or something??...See MoreFlourescent bulbs flicker with ceiling fan remote
Comments (5)I tried some of the very expensive dimmable cfl bulbs (I borrowed them from a fixture in another room). They still flickered, whch probably means that the remote receiver modulates too slowly (ie cheap defective design). It would also be prohibitively expensive (approx $160) to fully populate the four-socket fixtures on both fans with this problem. The ceiling fan is independent of the remote control receiver, which fits inline at the ceiling wiring connection. I'd buy another remote receiver in a heartbeat if I could find one with no dimmer on the lights. Unfortunately all of the receivers have this "feature" which makes them unusable with cfl bulbs. Very frustrating. I'm paying someone $100 to come out and remove the remote receivers this weekend. I can't reach them myself because they are on a 15 foot cathedral ceiling. Comments (2)Thanks, Jeff! I tried three fluorescent bulbs and they work well. They turn on right away at a lower wattage but, in about a minute, they are at full brightness. I never liked florescent lighting because the old kind used to flicker when turned on but I see they've made big improvements. Your suggestion also had a side benefit. My printer and my overhead light must be on the same line because when I used to print something, the overhead light would flicker for about 15 minutes until the printer went back "to sleep." With the florescent bulbs, the flicker is much less and only for as long as the printer is actually printing. I was going to have an electrician rewire the overhead light but now I may be able to live with it! Thanks again, Jeannette...See MoreCeiling Fans - 60W Bulbs or 13W Bulbs?
Comments (20)I lived in a house with only lamp and sconce lighting, and if you happen to be in the middle of the sofa, with no light near, you would kill for an overhead light. We bought a home recently and completely renovated it. First thing on the list: Can Lights! They are everywhere, and guess what? My lamps are going to family first (whoever gets their dibs in), and Craigs list next. Our house is amazingly lit, but we did need fans here in So CA, and we ended up with some beauties with glass light shades. We have not yet turned the ceiling fan lights on, but they sure look pretty, and the fans move the air all the time! My best to you! Enjoy your lit ceiling fans!! Suzi...See Moredan1888
