Thanks for the replies so far. The window sill would be replaced if we go with the wider casing and may need to be replaced if we go with the narrow too. The padding out would put an inch piece of wood on all sides of the insides of the window (but not cover the glass), basically giving a wider surface onto which to attach the casing. There is just enough room for the 2 1/4 inch trim to fit and clear the corner of the crown. We mounted the crown so the top of the it would line up with the top of the casing. Here is another angle of the other kitchen. To me it looks like they took the wide casing all the way up to the ceiling and that the top of the crown covers a little corner of it. Because the brick around the door is sheltered by the overhang you could probably paint it without having to worry about damaging its ability to breathe. However, there is an alternative way to change the color of brick and mortar. I've been fascinated by DYEBRICK since I first discovered the company. The non-toxic, water-based stain soaks in so the texture of the brick is retained. In addition to traditional brick colors they offer LimeLike that can significantly whiten even dark brick. Final color is determined by dilution rate with the fixative. HERE is a photo of one job. The only problem is that people from the U.S. and Canada have to order the product from England.

I would like to put a hardy or wood trim inbetween the cement and brick. Similar to the trim in the picture. I think that is simply trim on the chainwall. The difference between this and what I think you are doing, is that the picture has wood flooring that likely overhangs the foundation wall and the trim is tucked under it but adhered to the face of the foundation. I think you are saying the floor of your porch will be cement. Will that create a right angle to the foundation wall with no overhang? Maybe I'm completely confused.

If it was to be made from an actual PVC "type" product like Azek, they'd just make a pattern and cut out of a taller board. That wouldn't necessarily match better than paimted wood though. If cladding is desired, it can be done with the face and returns as separate pieces, however it needs to be done by someone with a high level of skill to come out nice. The "lobster tail" is an option as well, although that is used more often on full half rounds. As for the J, the arch isn't extreme so they may have been able to form that to the opening.
