We have been battling these nasty little things for the past month! I even bought an electronic trap with a light and a fan to suck them onto a sticky pad at the bottom of the jar. Minimal success.

I've bought an organic fly trap bottle of stuff that my husband spilled so there's only about 2" left in it. That has got a lot of them. We did a homemade jar full of water, acv and dish soap which has also gotten a lot. But they still persist!

All started with a big bowl of cherry tomatoes brought in from the garden. Ugh.

Pour Apple Cider Vinegar with a few drops of dish soap into a container. Only needs an inch of liquid. Cover with plastic wrap and secure with a rubber band. Poke some holes into the wrap to let the flies enter. Once they enter and drop into the liquid, the dish soap that was added prevents them from escaping and they drown.

I've done the acv and dish soap traps, with limited success. I thought I'd try something different. It's been a few hours, but I used overripe avocado. So far no luck. I also have some very ripe mango. They'll have fruit salad before I'm done!

Make sure your garbage disposal and sink drains are flushed out. Baking soda, vinegar and hot water. Those pesky things breed in there I think.

Good hint, skibby. It seems they might be congregating there. I cleaned the sink, but not with vinegar and baking soda.

I use skibby's method for general cleaning of my sink drains and garbage disposal and seems to keep these clean and free of fruit flies. For the garbage disposal I also throw in a cut up lemon when cleaning.

Apparently if you do use your garbage disposal (which I don;t) throwing in ice cubes keeps the blades sharp. Whether this is true or not I have no way of knowing for sure.

Well for good or bad, I don't have a disposal. So I guess they're in the drains.

We put some diluted bleach down each of our drains after reading about that online. For some reason one bathroom also has a couple. No food in sight there so figured maybe they're in the drain lines?

The company that I bought the electronic trap from emailed me and asked how it was going. When I told them it wasn't, they suggested putting a cotton ball with wine on it in the trap to help attract the flies. Haven't tried that but it's next on the list. I did notice they were attracted to an empty wine glass that hadn't been washed yet.

It's worth asking.....are you certain that they are fruit flies? Fungus gnats and drain flies are often mistaken for fruit flies but each has its own feeding habits.

A few drops of soap added to the acv or juice in order to keep fruit flies from flying away, nothing else needed. The soap breaks the surface tension on the liquid and they sink immediately. No plastic wrap required.

I had to laugh at your comment Dawn. I hope he takes a bite and says - boy is this good! Ha!

rhizo is right. I use a baby food jar, fill it about half way with any vinegar (I just happened to have an abundance of white vinegar for some reason) add three or four drops of dish detergent, swirl, set & walk away. Next day (24 hrs or so) you should see a milky mass settled in the bottom of the jar loaded with fruit flies. I pour into the sink drain with hot water running for a few minutes.

Hmm. well I hadn't considered their nutritional value. I may have included a few in last night's stir fry. We don't have swarms, just enough to be annoying. And I haven't determined their lineage, maybe they are drain flies. They do not seem to like avocado, unless it's on my plate.
