do your cats sleep when you do?
Comments (13)You have my sympathy. Once we had 4 Abyssinian cats, whose 12 kittens made nights miserable by running around on top of us and biting our toes. It was like having a herd of tiny wild horses in the room. The remedy was to tire them out before bed. We would drag strings for them to chase around the apartment till they could hardly run any more. Irishdancersgram: "when they get older, they'll probably settle down...." Hah! Yes, that is what usually happens, but for the past few months, our 16-year old, who does sleep for much of the day, has taken to wandering around and practically howling for hours and hours during the night. He is healthy, but too old to be interested in playing, so we can't tire him out. While he cries in that loud, demanding Siamesey way (though he is not Siamese), he is leaping from the bed to the window to other furniture and back again, or running heavily right up my body to look at my face and go "purrup" in that endearing inquisitive way cats have. He is worse in warm weather and at the time of the full moon, and I wonder if there are skunks, other cats, or possums in the back yard, so he is dying to go out there. The most I will let him do at night is look out the window. By around 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning, he is ready to settle down. We are wondering if he is getting a bit senile because he never used to give us so much trouble at night. To my relief, the colder weather now seems to impel him to get under the covers and stay there. No trouble last night....See MoreRECIPE: How do you get enough protein?
Comments (9)A great way to "stretch" is to add textured vegetable protein to your diet. It's really cheap, and you re-constitute it, so you can soak it in stocks. Add it to ground meat or use it instead of meat. I'm vegetarian, and we re-constitute it in a mushroom broth with some Dr. Bronners thrown in. I mix it with spaghtetti sauce for pasta (gives nice texture), or macaroni and cheese...it pumps up the protien in these foods without adding too much of an odd texture like tofu is to some people or the beany taste from beans that some folks don't like. Lentils are another huge staple of our diet. There are tons of different kinds, and they have a very pleasant taste. Of all dry beans they are fastest to cook. My mom makes a great lentil salad with cooked brown lentils, diced celery, tomatoes, black olives and a bit of feta with a clear Italian or vinagrette dressing. You can throw them into a simple broth, with carrots, potatoes and celery and have a great soup.... Nancy mentioned B12 and nutritional yeast is a great source of B vitamins. If you like tofu, here's a cheesy tasting tofu recipe from The Grit, in Athens, GA. Using super firm tofu, (or press it with a book to squeeze some water out), cube it small and fry it in a non-stick skillet (don't use oil, this browns it better). Then turn off your heat. Sprinkle it with some soy sauce (about a teaspoon for a whole box of tofu ) and then throw the nutritional yeast right in on top of it - it will stick. We put this on salad as our "croutons" and it is YUM!!!! Also excellent on stir fried veggies over brown rice (the Grit calls this their "Golden Bowl". Comments (28)Wow thank you for all the great advice and links! As far as liquids go I'm the only one with that problem. Will definitely try the water in the fridge idea. I'll have to label the bottle as mine. ;) The men have water with every meal and they drink a ton of filtered water from home at work. We freeze large jugs of filtered water and that goes into the electric fridge in the work truck. I allow only whole grains to go into my guys. They eat very healthily since I took the reins and snacks are healthy too. Heavy lifting and long days and hours makes them very hungry though. Home made chicken and or fish bone broth are eaten in every sauce but not every day. Maybe every 3 days... I don't put sauce on everything. I've tried to add heavier foods and more nutrients to every bite but they are lean and hungry still. Except DH. He is in transition from the heavy lifting to a more supervisory roll so has requested a less calorie dense diet. That's a work in progress. I wish my family were more like yours GL. But I think their systems are more hyperactive than some too. Only DH loves cold salads. DS and Nephews not so much. I'm trying but usually have to force myself to eat them. I find if I mix them in with my hot food on my plate and add more spices or sauce I enjoy them. Will roast veggies to have on hand for snacks. Love that idea. I personally love cauliflower rice stuffed peppers. Yum! Question does roasting decrease the nutritional value of the veggies much? I have found that using cauliflower/broccoli as the base in every sauce is working well, is not noticeable and has cut back a bit on the hunger problem. I keep threatening to add sardines to the sauce too. To sneak in more protein for myself I will give it a try. :) Thank you so much again. I will take the advice to heart and try to shift my thinking....See MoreWhat do YOU do when you can't sleep?
Comments (66)It's no wonder you're having trouble sleeping with that bright light shining into your bedroom. The management of the other building may not realize that it's so intrusive. Perhaps you could ask them to adjust it so that it doesn't shine so directly into you apt. I rarely have trouble getting to sleep, but I sometimes hve trouble staying asleep and find myself awake in the wee hours. It doesn't happen very often now, but the last few years of my working life it was almost every night. I chalked it up to having work related things on my mind. Anyway, what I did/do that works like a charm for me is to play a mental exercise. I'll pick something like places, foods, names, etc., and starting with the letter A think of all of the places/foods/names I can that start with A. When I can't think of anymore, I move to B and so on. Rarely do I get further than C or D before falling back to sleep. An example of places could go something like Alaska, Arkansas, Amsterdam, Africa, Albuquerque and so on. I'm always amazed at how well it works as I would think it would stimulate my brain and make me more awake, but it seems to have the opposite effect....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
