Cover or Ideas for Floor Wood Cold Air Return Vent - 1915 Home

Hello! I'm looking for ideas to 1) temporary cover and then 2) eventually repair or replace a wooden floor return grille in our 1915 dining room. It's not in a terrible spot, but whenever we have guests over, someone always ends up stepping on the grille (it's large, about 1'x2') and it's broken so they fall through a little bit.

1) We are hosting thanksgiving and would like to have a temporary fix to cover it. I will probably do plywood, but I'd like to see if I'm maybe missing a product that already exists that will look better? Has anyone done anything similar?

2) Long-term, since it's broken in places, I'd like to fix with something more sturdy, maybe iron. Has anyone done this or would you stick with wood? Any suggestions with where to get this? Search only comes up with the small ones.

Thank you!
