mounting tv's what do you do?

Well we have only had smaller tv's and decided it was time to get with the decade. We got a great deal on a great big tv (big to us- probably normal size to most people. ). DH had them mount it on the wall , which I am actually pleased about, but I realize we should have some sort of tv stand or console under it for functionality and looks. However, I had assumed that once we got one of those pieces of furniture, that the wires would be taken care of, meaning covered or not eyesores. Am I missing something or did we kind of screw up on this?

Just for details, the tv is a 50 inch and I am considering (just to give you an idea) either a stand like this (might not be my dream one, and might be bigger than I want or need, but could work and just to show an idea)

or more bare bones but just for idea

Should I be looking more for cabinet height which might cover the wires more or any guidance you can suggest? Fwiw, very traditiona.'transitional decor.
