Comments (27)Stromatolites at Hamelin Pool, Shark Bay, Western Australia Stromatolites are basically microbial mats formed by the interaction of microorganisms like cyanobacteria with sedimentary materials, which build up in layers over centuries. They're not very photogenic, are they? But they are incredibly important in the development of the earth as we know it: first, because they represent one of the earliest forms of life on earth, dating back 3.5 billion - yes, billion - years; and second, because they produced oxygen which, over time, increased the atmospheric levels to a point capable of supporting more complex life forms. 7 years agoLake Tahoe area - taken from the car so not quite as crisp as it should be and unfortunate that I don't have one without power lines. Oh well!

A couple of years ago at this time of year our group hosted the Virginia Field Hunter Championship
The date was Nov 6th, and it seemed to be the peak of fall color

Also the same day our group hosted a Fall Hunter Pace, which is a timed, marked, ride across country in small groups ...
with optional small or larger jumps
The group that finished closest to the "optimum time" would win, but considering that the "optimum time" was not disclosed before the competitors rode it seemed pretty random to me. However considering it looked like this that day, everybody won.
The cows whose fields they were riding through were not impressed.
