Advice please from lighting experts!

What is the best way to fairly consistently "light wash" an entire wall without having light beams in your eyes and without lighting up the entire area too bright (really just want to wash the wall that will give the space more than enough light)? The first picture below is the space that is being gutted for new tile, paint, lighting... thinking of a graffiti art wall (the one opposite the book shelves you see here). Hallway is 8 foot wide and 15 feet long. Ceiling height 104".

Will also have an art door that slides between a bedroom and master bathroom. Same question for this, but in this case, if the light is on and you are coming from the other side of the door, seems like the light would shine right in your eyes? Example pictures below.

One option since you're gutting the space...

A built-in cove that runs the length of the wall and hides the light source, similar to this Belvedere reverse cove:

Or perhaps drop the ceiling plane down four to six inches and create a pocket (of roughly the same size) around the perimeter that can hide the light source.

Thank you for that - it's a super interesting idea. I'm still very curious about what type of lighting (what would the light source be?) would get used to wash the wall and the distance from the wall if it was to highlight art? Are you able to offer comment on that? This seems more like a way to bright a touch of lighting around a perimeter up much closer to the ceiling? Being this close to the wall, would that allow for highlighting art work on a wall? Or washing the entire wall ? Thanks!

Google non suckering lilac cultivars and the site "NGC -Lilacs for the Prairies" will give you a listing of the Father Fiala's and a lot more. Can't recommend any of them since my 100' plus hedge is comprised of the old common lilacs which were planted @1900. These, of course, sucker, but it makes the hedge extremely dense. This was a good year for lilacs, the blooming was spectacular.

Caveat: I'm not a builder, so this is just a consumer opinion. I believe the typical pool should draw more water from the skimmer than the main drain - useful for circulation and cleaning of surface debris. There are even some who claim drains are "old school" thinking and can be eliminated. Makes a 2-1/2" drain line coupled with a 2" skimmer line not make sense to me. I would suggest both at 2-1/2" but bow to Scott's more extensive experience if he revisits this thread. In my area the cost difference between a 10' stick of 2" and 1-1/2" is about 50 cents. Since there is no practical cost difference when compared against the larger pool construction costs, there is no reason not to have both in-floor and wall returns to be 2" except at the fitting itself. I have in-floor (but not cleaning) and wall returns and they are both 2" right up until the pipe penetrates the pool shell. In general flow/pump terms, to prevent cavitation noise and pump wear, the suction side flow capability should be the same or greater than the pressure (in-floor wall return) side. Hence something like 2-1/2" on suction, 2" on return. Note: two 2" pipes together flow about the same as one 2-1/2" pipe, so a 2" drain and a 2" skimmer all the way back to the pad is about like a single 2-1/2" from pool to pad. Rebar requirements depend on a lot of variables that are local to soil, etc. In my area (virtually 100% sand - Florida barrier island) 12" on center is sort of standard until depths exceed 6 feet.

Josh, that is also what I've heard. I've got a few good friends who are up there now hoping to catch the fresh powder on the slopes. I myself have never been to fond of the "ice" sports. Too cold for my liking, but I did get the pleasure of taking my 3 yr old daughter ice skating for the first time last weekend in tahoe which was fun to witness. She loved it. I am killing myself waiting to re-pot these Meyers! I've got everything ready to roll, just taking your advice and waiting for March/April. I made a thread in the container forum but might as well ask you as well here.... When repoting Into the air pots, if any roots are longer then the pots, do I prune them to size or do I just stuff them into the pot? I bought the 15 gal air pots so I don't think I will have any crazy long roots but just want to be sure of what to do so I don't make a last minute drastic decision. I think I know why framers are having trouble with the picture. First off that's either not an actual patio roof or one of sorry design. There's no laths for sheet metal it would rattle in the slightest breeze then blow off in anything above 40 mph wind. Another thing is wide angle focal length of camera lens make's the room look like half of a hexagonal roof like is popular on gazebos when in reality I believe it's actually a hip. I recommend a gable style roof with same pitch as house has. The width of new roof dictate's how far up old roof the ridge starts. Tear off shingles and alow rafters to rest on deck if decking is 1/2" or more plywood,5/8ths or more osb or 1x boards. If deck is thin,weak or unlevel,rest all jack rafters on a 2x6 with angle ripped along valley. Let's talk about complications. I would not rest beams on house,construct dedicated pillers against wall of house. The underside of new roof that's over old roof will be unattractive if framed as suggested above so you need to think about what to do about it. The simplest solution is framing in a wall to cover the void. If you want beams same as patio,reinforcment in attic will be required to transfer weight to walls of house. Since you have no ceiling and consequently no ceiling joists above patio,you will have to do something to prevent walls spreading under load of roof. You could install beams from plate to plate or even painted cables. If it were mine I would remove patio door,wall between door and window,window and possibly additional wall then install a lam-beam above. Where door and wall were removed,two pair of hinged double doors.

Cove lighting is really about washing the surface with light. Cove lighting can bring light to artwork so long as the size of the cove and amount of light is carefully planned and the art is not in deep frames.

The light source for the Belvedere or site-built cove would be LED tape. While there are many tapes available, my current favorite comes from American Lighting, called TruLux and comes in a variety of color temperatures and lumen outputs. They also offer tunable white and color changing options.

If you prefer specific art lighting as done in a gallery space, there are great variety of fixtures to choose from. I would suggest using fixtures that stay minimal in size, using MR16 or small PAR LEDs from Soraa (producing LED bulbs with some of the best color ratings currently available).

Thanks so much - that does make sense ... and I love this idea for a graffiti wall. I should have realized how far the light would go. A few years ago I raised the ceilings to create a cathedral ceiling in a room and put molding around the lengthwise walls of the room with LED tape uplighting. At the lowest dimmable setting it gently lights from 9 feet up to the 16 foot cathedral area... and when it's higher it could be like daylight at night... so now I'm realizing how much it could wash a wall if the opening was under instead of above. If the height of the wall is 104" and the goal is to wash the entire wall (let's say no art frames... just painting directly on a wall), how much distance would you want for the gap? Would it just be about an inch or so? Or maybe even less? -- Thank you so much - I never would have thought of this and it's perfect.

The Belvedere type of cove will only give you an inch of so for spacing.

If you do a site-built cove you can open it up a bit more. The actual design of the cove, placement of the LED tape and the actual model of tape (and it's lumen output) would all have to factor into the size of the opening.
