smallish upright freezer recommendations, please
Comments (10)Crosley is a brand. The Crosley brand is owned by a a consortium of Canadian and US distributors who have things made under contract the way that Sears does with its "Kenmore" brand and Coscto does with its "Kirkland" brand. Appliance411.com says that the Crosley freezers are made in the former WC Wood plant that Whirlpool purchased a couple of years ago. Consumer reports does not have a Crosley in its current ratings for upright freezers and it is kind of hard to tell which Whirlpool freezer would be comparable. Interesting to see the ratings now because none of the uprights get good ratings for noise. I note that Frigidaire is down at the bottom now. I think CR does relatively rankings, which means that even the "good" rated ones are no better than the other noisy ones. A Haier model was the only one that I saw that got a better than average noise ranking. (I think it might be the one that is on the floor at Costco.) Comments (0)Does anyone know of a largish (~20 cu ft) upright freezer that has reversible doors (or hinges from the left side)? We had been looking at the Kenmore Elite 28099 until we discovered that the door only opens to the right, and that won't work for us. Ive found two: An Amana AQF2013TEW, but it only has manual defrost, and I don't want to deal with that. The other is a Whirlpool EV209NBTQ which has two doors (it might be okay) Anyone know of anything else?...See Moreextension cord for upright freezer
Comments (24)On tippy toes I can't reach all of the breaker switches on the panel, darn. Have to admit I had also put one of the laundry baskets on top of the freezer, so an extra impediment, albeit removeable. But we could put a stepstool under the laundry sink nearby (just to the right of the washer). At least we don't have chewing pets! Before this, we've always had some narrow-ish steel shelving under the breaker panel... also had laundry baskets on top of that & they had to be removed to get at the panel. Finally found specs on label inside the door of the washer: 12 amps, 120 volts, 60 Hz. So if the freezer happened to be 5 amps, then total is 17 amps and surpasses 15 amps of the extension cord?? Anyway for now the extension cord in question has been seconded for a new use: for a 3-tiered fluoro plant growing setup (Floralight I think; originally from Lee Valley) that I got second hand; now can transplant my 'maters! That is in another room & extension cord was needed since each of the 3 fluoro lights has its own cord/prongs. Had to take up the whole outlet receptacle in that spot because of that downward orientation of the cord out of the prong part... would be stressed by location of the recepacle to put it in the bottom outlet because it runs into "sitting" area of fireplace jutting out from the wall just under the outlet. But I digress... Except that now to plug in the freezer, if indeed it stays where it is (& I can't think of another place where it will fit... can't fit it beside the box or it'd block the dryer), we'd need to buy another extension cord... so then if we did go ahead, would a 20 amp one be better as per rtscoach's post early on? I guess I still have to "find out what is on the circuit"... if only 15 amps then would a 20 amp cord be too much?? Boy this would be a good time if I had time to "study up" on general electricity/wiring info, but I wouldn't trust my own studying on this!...See Moreupright freezer choices
Comments (6)I skipped the frost free feature too, I've never had a frost free freezer and I know the things tucked into my bottom mount freezer of my refrigerator do not keep well especially long term. The young appliance clerk at our Sears didn't know freezers came manual defrost, but that's another story... I had an old faithful 23 cubic foot Kelvinator upright, purchased about 6 months after we were married when my MIL gifted us with half a beef. It was more than 40 years old, worked flawlessly, never skipped a beat. Required defrosting about once a year, not even an especially traumatic chore. When we moved 2 years ago, I sold it with the house and bought new energy efficient Whirlpool 18' manual defrost upright. I thought the size would suit our needs now - it really doesn't. I'm still crowding things into my bottom mount refrigerators freezer, and a couple of times I've even taken advantage of some space in a side by side a friend is temporarily storing in my garage. Its more convenient to the kitchen in this house, fits into a cubby in a hallway (same floor) next to my laundry room. That does mean its being opened more frequently than old faithful was, but 6 months is almost too long to go without defrosting. That old riddle about does the light stay on in the refrigerator when the door is closed? The one is this freezer does. I know this because it thawed wild blackberries on the shelf next to the light. The service man fussed with the door alignment about 2 hours when it was brand new, he did not sound completely convinced the light switch would make solid contact with the door and turn off when closed. When he left I took the bulb out. So, it's not quite big enough, and I'd have trouble if it wasn't placed in a brightly lit hallway. I miss old faithful....See More
