Need helping finding taller chairs for dining room table

I bought chairs with a 20 inch seat height, upholstered, so there is a little bit of give when one sits. I bought a table that is 30 3/4 high (Kensington by Arhaus) plus felt sliders, which are minimal but add to it.

I feel like the table is 1 inch too high for the chairs, and I know that 20 inches is already the high end of standard for dining chairs. I looked into plastic slides that would add an inch annnd probably look terrible and come off eventually.

My best solution aside from adding a stack of felt pads to the chairs is to buy wood chairs and then buy cushions or have them made, but I don't love the look of wood chairs for my table. I have tried searching for 21 inch seats but have not been successful. I welcome any suggestions.

I don't think you'd want a 21-inch seat height, even if you could find chairs that size. For most average height people, this would not be comfortable.

Standard dining chair seat height is 18 inches, so I'm confused why the 20-inch chairs aren't working. Maybe try living with them for a while and see if you get used to them.

Well, they are smooshing down a bit when you sit on them, so perhaps it's more like a 18-19 inch height. Thank you!

What is the "vibe" you are going for? My chairs would look great with your table, but they're simple leather with contrasting stitching. But my place is definitely contemporary/modern. (Obviously, there's a huge difference between the antique chairs tibbrix posted and the modern chairs Lars posted).

As far as the mason jars on the wall, this is what I had envisioned but I just want everything to be uniform and match is all. Ignore the dark wood... I would prob stain it the same color as the table is stained so it matches... or does it even matter?

Put your centerpiece on the chess table. Is the other ornate dining set for breakfast, gaming or could it be used here? Do you want to continue with the cow head/skin theme, leaning SW in your decor? They aren't really "cozy and elegant," IMO. Is a new chandy in the picture? That one misses the mark on elegance. You need a minimum of 36-42" from the table top to any baseboards or furniture surrounding the table to allow for chair sit/scoot space. I'd do that measurement first. I really wouldn't want the rug jammed up against the exterior wall. Maybe the smaller, round table would be a better choice for using a rug here.

its your dining table's fault. standard height is about 30", and yes you sink in some upholstered chairs depending how they are constructed. even though a 'normal' difference is 12" (which would mean a 19" chair for your table), if your bum (and therefore spine) are sinking below the wood frame you are getting less than the measured height.

i'd rethink the felt sliders on the table, or else find straight chairs that can be custom made an inch taller.

it doesnt matter what the ruler says... you know if you have that sinking feeling.....

(we went through this.... fortunately we bought our chairs and table from the same store and werent able to try the sample chairs with our table. turned out the table was higher than all of their other tables. they remade the custom chairs an inch taller and i've been able to eat at the table without feeling like i'm 9.)

ninigret, do you mind sharing where you bought custom made chairs? I agree, the 30.75-31 is too tall. But we love the table and it was difficult to find a table that could accomodate 16. Bought some sliders, will also hunt for 20 inch wood chairs. Thanks!

Why don't you find a woodworker who can take 3/4 inch off the base of your dining table? It looks like it should be feasible. It won't look quite as pretty, but it will still seat 16 (!!!) and should be a lot cheaper than buying a complete set of dining chairs.

sheisindeed, our chairs and table were made by Pompanoosuc Mills in VT. They were totally gracious and didnt try to tell us that our chairs were just the right size and what was our problem. they whisked ours away and made a new set 1 1/2" taller. ( Of course, they would have had no problem selling our set off the floor at one of their showrooms).
