Comments (3)His mom is always going to come first. You can either give him full and uncomplaining support, or you walk. My MIL lives with us. She has dementia and it's getting worse. Fortunately, she's a very nice lady and unlike your MIL, relatively easy to take care of. But it's clear I don't count as far as she's concerned; only my husband (her only child) does. What I say doesn't matter; only what he says is important to her. Yes, she stresses him out. But he has learned that he can in fact say "no" to her more unreasonable demands, and it isn't the end of the world. You'd be surprised how hard that lesson is to learn, sometimes. And no one can do it for anybody else; that's a personal journey of self-awareness (aka maturity) that every person has to travel by himself/herself. I'd suggest therapy or counseling for both of you. If you get someone good, it can be a great help. It isn't easy to always admit one needs help, and a lot of people feel they're too busy to do it. But it can really be a lifesaver, or in your case, a marriage saver....See MoreThe alternative to care-giving
Comments (5)Fairegold, it happens with younger people too... It happened to my best friend last year... He was only 62 years old... He did not live alone, he was married and had two boys who usually stopped by 5 or 6 time a week... He had tons of friends who talked to him on a regular basis, at least once a week and a few every day... We used to exchange e-mail 10 to 15 times a day... Yet he died alone and wasn't discovered for 3 days... His wife was out of town, visiting with her family... He had been at his oldest sons house on a Friday night and sent me e-mail when he got home saying he had a long day and was heading for bed... On Saturday I sent a few more e-mails but I wasn't too worried that I didn't receive any replies because I figured he was working on one of his classic cars or went to one of the car shows... Sunday morning when he still hadn't answered any of my mail I called... The phone only rang... He was found, by his youngest son, Monday morning, lying on the kitchen floor, dead... He had an aortic aneurism so ( thank God ) it was quick but for a man with a large family and hundreds of friends...See MoreDid I say I was going out of town? Silly me!
Comments (3)We did get away for one night last weekend, up to San Francisco, about 2 hours away, so we did manage to escape briefly. And I got word that my puppy, not even a year old, had a major win at the dog show today, and a reserve win yesterday. It's a big deal. Wish I could have been there, but I am fortunate to have lots of friends who have reported back to me about the pup's win and how she looked, too. Thanks for your concern. I really see Mother slipping in her overall condition, and she knows it, too. She's so frail, it's scary. I'll know more tomorrow....See MoreHelp Button
Comments (4)My dad got life alert for my grandfather. He lived alone across town in his mid eighties. He only used it a few times. One night getting into bed he kind of fell. He didn't injure himself but couldn't get up so slept the night on the floor. He said he was going to push the button on the Life Alert and probably could have gotten to the phone but didn't want to wake anyone or bother anyone. He waited until morning to push the button and they contacted my dad. We got him into a Sr. apartment not to long after and was with us til he was 93. I think that was really the best thing. He was a hit at the Sr apartments. He was such a sweet man, he had a lot of "girlfriends" there....See More- 8 years ago
