Comments (51)LL, I just saw your new post. Sorry for the delay--I haven't been on that much. I think your window sill idea sounds fantastic! That will look really great. As a contrast to all the people who are trying to talk you out of perfectly good tile because they're so caught up in a different look: Last night, I was tired. I had made duck legs and was pouring out the separated fat before reducing the sauce. As I often do, I poured the fat in a container from the recycling. Didn't notice the holes in the bottom! So there's duck fat with port wine and cherry juice running all over the tile counter. I thought, well, here I go, I'm going to find out how hard it is to clean grout! Feh. What problem? Cleaned up as easily as stone. Again, no sand in the grout, which I agree is a pain. Sanded is perfectly cleanable, but not pleasant. The glass idea was clever, but please don't do it! Glass nicks very easily, and you can also shatter the corners. It's fine for an eating or serving counter, but is not a good material for heavy work. And that's counter glass. Just regular tempered sheet glass wouldn't work at all....See MoreGood bones stand the test of time?... 1985 Kitchen Refresh *Pic
Comments (24)gbsim Your house with real wood trim, moulding and doors look very lovely, warm and grounded. Don't let anyone paint that beautiful wood trim in awful contractor special white that looks shiny and tacky at the same time. I am so tired of looking at cheaply done MDF shiny white trim on so many houses that it is a breath of fresh air to see real wood trim and moulding. Not only does the MDF and bad paint job make the trim look shiny, most people end up picking stark white that makes the trim look like pimples with make up on it. Coupled with strong paint color on the walls, whew! Good luck selling your house! It really has kept its age well. I know what you are talking about: the unknown construction quality. We have gutted and redid our house. There is nothing left of the original house. We can't imagine not knowing how things were done behind the walls. My husband even had them put metal flashing between each joins of the lap siding! (kind of extreme but...) We have a walk out basement: we call it daylight basement here. They don't live like basemnet at all. I suggest exploring in floor hydronic heating for the basement slab. It is expensive but it makes the basement quite comfortable....See MoreCreamy White Delicatus Finished Kitchen
Comments (58)breadandsuch, I am waiting for a price quote on the Shiloh Inset cabinetry since I fell in love with the look in a show room near me and I remember that is what you had also that I loved. I will keep you and everyone updated. My kitchen is smaller but Home Depot refacing gave me a ridiculous $18,000 to reface my cabinetsbefore new counters and leaving the soffit and Home Depot $9,000 before removing the soffit and new counters and installation of my floors. I am hoping the new cabinets will be doable since I love them and I am ready also for a new counter and better lighting. The cabinet store had the Polar in the store with the square recessed panel and it was beautiful. But yours is so beautiful also. I guess if the quote is good, I will then have to decide between the Polar and the Soft White....See MoreReady to choose the back splash for my two-tone kitchen!
Comments (50)Ack, sorry again for my very delayed reply. As usual, LIFE got in the way - how annoying! ;) rebunky: I was so disappointed by how pricey the Calacatta tiles were that I didn't even want to take photos of them! Wow - I didn't know that $20/sq ft was on the low end for Calacatta. I think that nixes it for me then. :( namarie: I know your kitchen so well! ;) I didn't realize your tiles were Calacatta Gold - I always thought that CG had more brown tones than grey? I did some Googling and I see lots of tiles with the same colours as your tiles so it looks like I assumed wrong! I think your choice to do tile with very narrow grout lines makes for a nearly-slab-like look! I'd love to get the slab look too but it is WAY too pricey, and I wonder how the heck to remove a slab BS should I ever tire of it?? Kitchen Magic: I did really like the look of some mini bricks I saw at the tile stores I visited. I like how the ones like in your photo have muted colours so it gives me a multi coloured backsplash without being too busy. cpartist: how gorgeous are those cement tiles?? I've never seen cement tiles before and it looks like the design possibilities are endless, if you get them with some graphic design printed on. smm5525: Good idea. I will do that instead of dragging all of you along with me as I think aloud!! Sorry for that... I just really love to see all the different ideas you all share! mayflowers: Hmm... I agree that I can't have both the BS and the counters look busy. The London Grey is staying so I think I'll be going with a solid BS for most of the kitchen... but I'll still consider putting in a more "busy" mosaic tile somewhere, most likely in the hutch area. :) barncatz: I agree - I love the tiles everyone's shared! It helps me figure out and narrow down what I want for my BS tile....See MoreAglitter
