Nashville Floods. Kitchen in a hurry. Need LO help
Comments (5)I have no experience laying out kitchens (just in planning stage for my re-do) but I would move the stove/cooktop to the opposite wall. That would give you a stretch of counter near the sink for prep (also wouldn't have to move sink). I also think having the cooking area on the opposite wall (probably middle of counter area) would give you some room to assemble ingredients and de-congest the other wall. Comments (23)My vanity has no drawers, so I have a tall cabinet with open shelves to one side and a smaller, vanity height cabinet with a door on the other side. I keep everythign in dedicated baskets on the shelves. All OTC meds go in one, Toothbrushes, toothpaste-all oral hygiene items go in another. One to hold lotions, cremes, anything you apply to your body. One holds hair related things that I don't use all the time-straightener, extra boxes of color. A smaller basket holds hair ties, clips etc. I have a large vessel my DD1 made in HS that stores hair brushes, combs, blow dryer, etc. It sits on the counter. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc are in a basket. I keep my make up and personal grooming things in an over the toilet cabinet. I store tubed items, pencils, brushes-anything with a longer handle in pretty highball glasses. Nail utensils are in another. Small, pretty baskets hold make up, manicure items, cotton balls...I have small containers for groups of like items. I hate having to dig to get to what I want, so if I group them by like items, it's easier to find. I keep my medications in a basket that I have near my chair in the family room-I take them with my morning coffee-but if you have some you take at night, keep a pretty basket in the bathroom. In the other bathroom (DH uses that one) I have decorative jars to hold/hide his contact lens stuff, grooming items and in the cabinet I keep plastic containers that hold first aid things, extra hair products, his personal grooming things-deodorant, after shave, etc. I really hate to see things out in the open, so generally the only things on the counters in the bathrooms are the soap dispensers....See MoreNashville in mid-April?
Comments (13)I'm so jealous! We've been to Nashville 4 times in the last year or so to purchase/visit our property in the Franklin Leipers Fork area but never in the middle of spring. I've heard that's one of the most beautiful times to visit. I would also recommend the backstage tour of the Ryman. I've been twice and it's really interesting. I would also recommend visiting the Nashville Capitol Bicentennial park to see the bells and granite maps documenting the state history. We also enjoyed several evenings at the Listening Room where singer songwriters perform on stage while you enjoy a nice dinner. You have to try the Nashville hot chicken at Hattie B's (my DS ordered the hot chicken everywhere we went and all were delicious but Hattie B's was the best! There are different heat levels ranging from no heat to Damn Hot and Shut the Cluck Up hot!). The 3 story Acme Feed and Seed is fun too and also has great food and live music, but it was very busy on a Saturday. Downtown Franklin is really charming and there's great shopping at the nearby antique stores and at The Factory down the street. Definitely check out The Iron Gate, City Farmhouse, and The Barn Door. I would recommend lunch or dinner at 55 South, Pucketts in downtown Franklin for great bbq pork or brisket, or Pucketts Boat House for spicy shrimp and amazing cheesy grits. Bunganut Pig also has great burgers and music. If you're in Leipers Fork visiting your friend you could stop by the original Pucketts there for a good old fashioned ice cream cone and take a scenic drive down the Natchez Trace and the beautiful country roads around Beechwood Plantation and Old Hillsboro Road. Our farmhouse on 15 acres is nearby and we just fell in love with the area. The Carnton Plantation tour was amazing to learn about the Battle of Franklin during the Civil War. It was surreal and humbling to visit the children's bedrooms where the surgeries were performed on the Confederate and Union wounded soldiers and to see their bloodstains still remaining on the wood floors. Franklin is just an amazing place with so much history. All of this making me homesick and it's not even my home yet :) Hopefully by this summer!...See MoreWhat foodstuffs stay on your (informal) eating place?
Comments (34)Oh, Lars, I so agree on the salt pig! I was given one many years ago and it lives in the back of a cabinet. I don't think anything much can live on salt, but I don't like putting my cooking-dirty hand in it. I like cooking with regular salt, and I got a diner style stainless salt bin with perforated top and easy handle for myself when we moved into this house. If I want to "measure" a pinch, I'll sprinkle some in my hand until it's the right amount. If I want a proper measure, I unscrew the top and use a measuring spoon, or by weight I have a little very accurate digital scale for tiny amounts. I don't like using kashering salt, sea salt, or any such thing for cooking, though I will actually use my (washed and well dried) fingers for pinches of finishing salt, like fleur de sel. So the end of the old Bragg's vinegar bottle is still on the table, and it was useful! I got a little too enthusiastic with the habanero sauce at breakfast. It's delicious, but left a lot of burn. Nothing like a good slug of the vinegar in one's water to fix that. :)...See More- 6 years ago
