Ceiling color thoughts
Comments (16)Hmmm... this sounds interesting! I like my white ceilings in the bathroom (SW threshold beige walls, white door/trim) and "library" (SW obi lilac, trim is lightest color on the card but reads white, brown carpet). I've already seriously thought about painting the powder room ceiling to match the walls when it's redone in May. It's small, so it should work well. And now maybe the kitchen? What about in a great room with half normal ceiling and half vaulted ceiling? I think it would probably be best to keep the vaulted part white since it goes up the stairs and the upstairs hall. Would it look odd to color the half of the room that is normal height? Visual interest or bad idea?...See More'Princess' room ceiling options?
Comments (9)Hi Sharon -- I answered you in Decorative Painting but wasn't sure you'd see it so I'll answer you here too. First, please take a look at my ceilings thread in our Gallery. I'll give you a link to it below. You will find tons of gorgeous ceiling pics there to inspire you. Second, please don't ruin your neck. Paint your ceiling on canvas, then "starch/glue" it to the ceiling. That's what I understand the "biggies" do. Seems to me you could do it on lightweight paper and decoupage it up? Another option would be to simply do the whole ceiling in fabric, gathered in to the center/chandelier. I'm wondering if you could tie fabric to a hula hoop that surrounds the chandy, then drape it off to the corners? Just a whacky idea. The way I've seen it done, it was stapled up. Oh, also escucheons for light fixtures/chandys are relatively inexpensive if you just want to purchase one. I think most hardware or lighting stores carry them and I know I've seen them on the web. One more idea that isn't painting. I've seen lattice suspended parallel to the ceiling and silk flowers and twinkly Christmas lights woven into them. Very flashy (literally). I hope you'll post pictures when you're done! Here is a link that might be useful: Gallery -- Ceilings...See MoreHand Hewn Antique Beams on Ceiling - Yes or No?
Comments (34)So many great points! Aktillery and Madeyna: Thank you! NoSoccerMom: Thank you so much for the inspiration. I agree that a more contemporary feel would go better with the house. (But I still love those rustic beams!) Mtnrdredux: Thank you so much! I think that what you are saying makes a lot of sense. I look at photos and I love the European/French country look, but you are right - the design isn't going to come together if I don't give appropriate consideration to the home's architecture. GreenDesigns: I love your input! I definitely don't want roosters! I just want an aged look that's classic yet warm. I am not a fan of the stark/cold feeling that I get in modern interiors, so I have to figure out how to combine all of these elements in a way that makes sense with the house. PricklyPearCactus: Thank you so much for the info on the beams in your house. What you are saying makes total sense. Miz_M: Thank you so much for sharing! Now for an update... I have some really bad news. :( We went over the beam locations today in final preparation to order the beams for the living room. The bad news is that we are not going to be able to make them work there. It's a combination of structural support and spacing constraints (recessed lighting, sky lights and windows) that aren't allowing us to space them evenly or in a natural looking way. I am so frustrated. I've spent days trying to figure out how to make them work. The only way to make it work is to move the skylights and there's no way my husband is gonna go for that. Now the big question is... do I put beams in the entry? I have about a 20 foot long passageway with cathedral ceiling that leads past the dining room on one side and a wine closet on the other leading into the living room. Would it be ok to put beams there or is it going to be weird if I don't have them elsewhere in the house?...See MoreCoffered Ceiling Advice / Suggestions for 2 level ceilings
Comments (28)Why did you stop with the ceiling? And not give the windows proper casing to complete the look? I'm curious how you handled the ceiling on the other end of the room over the staircase and circular balcony....See MoreUser
