Comments (14)I have to agree that modern orange roses do not go well with OGRs. They need to be placed carefully with white or yellow "buffers" between them and OGRs. One of the most satisfying color combinations I have is the tall and ungainly 'Harison's Yellow' in front of a maroon rhododendron with the regal purple 'Cardinal de Richelieu' in front of 'Harison's Yellow' and the early blooming 'Stelle d' Oro' yellow daylily at the feet of the Cardinal. The worst color combination I accidently came up with was the beautiful red 'Frensham' next to the cerise pink 'Rosemary Rose'. I couldn't stand the combination and 'Rosemary Rose' was banished to the outback where it is still doing its thing along with the privet, poison ivy, and blackberries. There was a time when I thought the foliage of Rugosas was unnatural looking near the OGRs. Once I discovered how indispensable they are to those who garden in zone 4, I changed my tune and now find my zone 4 garden has mostly Rugosa hybrids....See MoreAdvice on update to prairie style kitchen
Comments (10)I also have warm wood cabinets, though not nearly as pretty as yours. I recently refreshed my kitchen with quartz counters, backsplash and farm sink. I got the Kohler Whitehaven "short apron" style sink which I am very happy with and I think it would be great in a prairie style. The shorter apron is a little more like a vintage American cast iron sink then the "tall apron" farm sinks which are more like the butler sinks of Europe. The Whitehaven is cast iron. It does come in a "tall apron" style too, so if you decide to order one, make sure you order the right one. My quartz is not technically a "marble" look but people often ask me if it is. Marble was frequently used to top wood washstands, so it you want something that looks a bit vintage, a quartz that evokes a feel of marble might be another choice. I love soap stone, but find working on a dark surface hard on my eyes, and I also wanted to keep my kitchen light. For my wood tone, cream worked best for the backsplash, though white may work better with other wood tones. Either worked with my countertop since it has cream, white, gray and a bit of beige in it. My kitchen is a little bit vintage / country in style, but I think the counter and backsplash are versatile to other styles. https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~93784356 https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~93784291 If you decide on soapstone - it is a good look with the cream tile:...See MoreUpdating windows and need advice on window style
Comments (1)Sounds like a plan. The bow window on the front there does look a bit out of place. You might want to consider a DH - Picture - DH combo there as well for a larger center picture window. I prefer the look of windows without grids myself....See Morekitchen flooring modernization/update advice
Comments (12)Patricia, Oh geez! We do not have plans for an entire new kitchen as we have 1 just started college and 2 heading to college in two yrs. It’s 11 yrs old so hoping to get at least 5+ yrs out of it to get us through the college payment years. We are wanting to change the flooring. I guess this is really just a flooring change / color opinion question, not so much modernization at this time. Millworkman, thank you for the info. This would make the project very involved....See Morerantontoo
