Except for the tree roots, nature didn't create this, but it kinda looks like a slot canyon. Taken at the Angkor Wat temple complex in Cambodia.

Views of the Starrucca Railroad Viaduct in Lanesboro PA. Can you imagine the undertaking that was when it was built in the mid 1800's.

Same as Nicole, we too visited the Antelope Canyon slot canyons near Page, AZ, maybe 3 years ago. Such beautiful shapes and colors down there. In stark contrast, the coal burning Navajo Power plant, one of the biggest polluters in North America, is less than a mile away and very visible from the parking lot. I hear it's in the process of shutting down, good thing.

I clicked onto this thread by mistake and am glad I did. Those tent rocks are amazing. The effects of erosion created by nature's wind and rain and ice and sun and water creates the most amazing shapes.

This reminds me of Roman viaducts constructed centuries ago. Same architecture, same daring. Its no place to have an accident or equipment breakdown.

Yes, except the Roman structures were constructed more than 2000 years earlier, with no powered machinery, limited math and science, and no modern materials (other than the ancient cement they had happened upon). By the 1800s, arched bridges had to have been well understood, the math well established, and not particularly challenging from an engineering standpoint.

Yes we saw a roman viaduct in France -- pont du gard -- and I can't imagine how they did that precise engineering ... apparently the drop for the water is only 1" across the whole duct ... in roman numerals, no decimals and no zero!

The Pont du Gard was a part of an aquaduct system that brought water from 50 km away to the city of Nimes in southern France over the course of that distance there was (IIRC) only 13 meters of drop in elevation for them to work with. An amazing engineering feat.

When we visited there we were told that the shores of the river were scoured clean of vegetation during a massive flood the previous year. In the flood entire houses were washed down river, the houses hit the "v"-shaped upstream edges of the aquaduct's supports and were smashed to bits, which then flowed harmlessly by the ancient edifice. Apparently that exact scenario was foreseen by the Roman engineers
