Comments (4)"Black Fountain Grass" is probably Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Moudry,' common name Black-Seeded Fountain Grass. It's a great plant, and I have several, but it doesn't reach 3' in my zone 7 garden. It's only 3 years old, but it tops out at about 30" to the blooms. It can also self-seed prolifically if it likes it's environment, so unless you will be cutting the seedheads, or collecting the seed, you'll have volunteers. There are hundreds of 3'+ ornamental grasses which would grow in your zone, but most of them won't provide a year-round screen for your utility box. A dwarf Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana) variety would be semi-evergreen to evergreen for you, so you might look for those. The cultivars are 'Pumila' (5-7'), 'Andes Silver' (7') and 'Patagonia' (7'). Other tall ornamental grasses would have to be cut to the ground every spring, and would take several months to regain their height....See MoreTips for Hiding a hideous City power box at edge of front yard
Comments (0)We have a hideous power box at the front edge of our yard. It is not in the view of our house when looking straight ahead (as seen in the 2nd image) but we live on a dead end culdesac and it obstructs the initial view of the home (as seen in the first image). Several neighbors have put up some sort of fluffy plant to cover it from view. I have never seen anyone access the larger box and I think it provides power for the light pole next to it. The smaller box is Charter Cable and I have seen them access it before. Any tips or suggestions for something I can do to make it look better? Technically, the right side of the box is over our neighbor's property line. I do not think they would care if we put something to cover it though and we are open to asking them if that is the best solution....See MoreHow to hide ugly pole in front yard?
Comments (11)As others have said, check with your local utility and municipality to find out what is allowed. I know around here one isn't allowed to put anything on the poles themselves or use the poles or guy wires for support of plants. My solution was to plant a large shrub at the base that is one that can be cut to the ground if needed. At eye level one just sees the shrub since it totally surrounds the yellow part of the wire, and the upper gray metal part isn't especially visible. No one can walk into the wire, we don't need to mow or trim around the obstacle, and there are spring flowers and fall color....See MoreElectrical box EYE SORE in Minnesota Front yard! HELP!
Comments (4)Where in Minnesota? If Emerald Ash Borer is there, the ash trees may not be for long. A weeping hemlock would handle the shade now and the sun later if it comes to that. I’d go with the serviceberry behind the box. tj...See Moresuser123
