Update, from oak & tile to white painted cabinets & granite
Comments (24)Thanks! So far the feedback from real estate agents who've seen the house has been positive. We're still not ready to sell though, perhaps in the fall. Meanwhile we've been enjoying the kitchen, except for an issue with the granite seam at the sink, argh! I really didn't want the seam there but I realize it's standard, and better to have a couple of small seams than one long one running front to back on the counter. The seam at the front of the sink is cracked and crumbling. I've posted for advice on the Stone Advice forum and am getting the fabricator to come out & fix it. Otherwise things are great and I'm loving the double oven. The top oven seems to take forever to heat up when it's in "regular" mode, but in convection mode things move a lot faster. I'm still experimenting, but so far it's been useful to have the 2 ovens....See MoreNeed advice on choosing granite color that compliments oak.
Comments (9)This is my wood kitchens idea book - just to show different light and dark countertops and wall paint colors: https://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/75202366/list/wood-kitchens This is my kitchen - just because I also have oak cabinets:) The countertop is quartz, but I wanted to show you the short apron farm sink should that be a style you like: https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~110720042 I like your backsplash too but keeping a 4" splash may not give you the look you want. If you do that, consider something light for a countertop that does not contrast much with the tile backsplash so the change from one splash to the other is not as apparent. Also, if you do not have under cabinet lighting, consider it. Every kitchen looks prettier with it, and it is the most functional change I made....See MoreNeed Advice for Oak Kitchen Upgrades
Comments (25)It's quite a puzzle to sort out when you aren't starting from scratch! Even then, with so many choices, I'm endlessly impressed with designers, decorators or anyone who is blessed with the "vision" it takes to bring a design challenge into focus and create something beautiful. The honest opinions from your different perspectives has triggered some heated discussions in our house! Design and personal taste bring out some inner passion, LOL... The most complicating factor, for me, is that underlying issue of a house as a commodity vs. a home and the effect that dichotomy has on our decision making. Our taste runs counter to the prevailing "resale value" taste. So, there's probably no way we are going to create a high "resale value" kitchen but we still hope to improve it. I am absolutely in love with cletile! Glo European Windows & Doors, thank you! And I also love the poured concrete idea, or maybe a concrete-look quartz... but there's debate about that in the family, with the other thought running towards a mystery white marble look. Replacing some of the cabinet doors with glass has gone over well so it looks like we'll be doing that for sure and maybe replacing some cabinets next to the sink with shelves... still mulling... We'll be re-reading all these comments over and over during the next month and hope to make some decisions so that we can get started in May. We'll post our progress. jhmarie, here's to refreshing an oak kitchen! I think yours turned out lovely! Well done. 123 Remodeling, thanks so much for taking the time to play with that photo! It's a great help to see some other colors and counter like that! To those of you who love the wood, your comments warmed our hearts! But all the constructive feedback is not only enormously helpful, it's fun! We've enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts. What a great resource this is. Many thanks....See MoreNeed advice on shade of granite that's appropriate
Comments (19)@MizLizzie @ljptwt7 Thank you so much for the feedback. I'm definitely not going to paint the cabinets. I'm content with them. @Patricia Colwell and everyone else that pointed put my floor mismatch- you saved me a lot of future heartache. I returned the flooring today! I'm not going to make the same mistake again of not having a cabinet piece with me when I pick out the flooring. I will take into account the feedback and will report back 😁 I know that I will have a much easier time finding the right granite selection once I settle on the right flooring....See Moreannied75
