tough living in Ohio in a presidential election year
Comments (11)Living in a DC suburb, all types of surveys seem to have our phone number. Too many? yes. More than usual for a presidential election year? no. Do we answer them? no, not any more. The breaking point came when 5 calls in a row were from folks speaking with so much accent, they were nearly unintelligible. Or maybe the break came from a call (sponsored by the challenger's office?) which quickly segued from the standard do-you-have-a-preference to a near-harangue deriding the incumbent. DH and I had been noting that there did seem to be a great many surveys that were definitely not impartial, which seems to remove them from the "survey" category. The calls have all left me with a very cynical regard for any published survey results. Anyway, past years have shown me that a few hours spent in public places, simply listening to overheard conversations [much easier now that cell phones are so common], will give a fairly accurate impression of which candidate has more support, and why the opposition isn't leading. I wonder if the general lack of dinner-table conversation combines with the way-too-many commercials to deaden the young ones to informed voting... if no one ever tells them *they* are responsible for the type of government we have, there isn't any reason for them to feel it necessary to vote for any particular candidate or issue....See MoreExcited Newbie Alert! Comments (4)Last fall, my leaf orders came after two or three days in the mail and were all very fresh and ready to go. I washed them and made a fresh angled cut, then put them in solo cups with holes made in the bottom. I use Miracle-Gro AV mix with close to equal part perlite. I used to use half mix and half perlite, but I have changed to using two parts mix and one part perlite. I also use a lot of make shift containers, the foil baking pans with plastic lids at the grocery store make good ones too. I have only lost a couple of leaves since I started all this last fall and now I have tons of babies and small plants. For the miniature leaves I put them in condiment cups (with holes) and even tiny coffee creamer containers. I kept them all covered and they did just great. Irina's tips are great too, I have learned a lot from her posts. I have a Photobucket album of my leaf propagation adventures, link is below. Good luck! Susan. Comments (10)Thanks for reminding me to check my rain gauge. It looks like we got about a half inch, too. I had that rain gauge for several years, but just left it sitting in the garage. Guesstimating has worked ok in the past, but this year is sure different. I put it out there in the yard a few weeks ago, but then forgot about it till you said something......See MoreAlert! Alert! Jiffy Cake Mix
Comments (13)Juellie, There has been a little confusion about the recipe. In the earlier thread, Kayjones said Glenda's was the right one. Glenda's: GREAT EASY CORNBREAD 1 (8 1/2 oz.) pkg. Jiffy corn muffin mix 2 (8 1/2 oz.) pkgs. Jiffy yellow cake mix, or 1 pkg. reg. yellow cake mix Mix each package as directed on box. You can do this all at once. Pour into a 9 x 13 pan. Bake at 350 degrees until done and golden brown. Great with butter and honey! So I will be using that one. Hope it works! Bump, that Jiffy site is a keeper. Some good sounding easy recipes there. TFS. The store locator said the store I went to has the cake mix. Guess they will until somebody buys those last 5 boxes. Maybe it will be available in some areas, but not all. Depends on how it sells I guess. Oh, I got Yellow cake mix. Sue...See More- 7 years ago
