Brown, brown, and more brown! Please help

Hello,

I recently purchased this home, and don't know what to do with all the brown! Everything is the same color except for the tan railing, and tan front door. Thoughts? Black shutters on the window to the right? Different garage door colors? Front door color? Also, the landscaping is a mess, and I need help with that. Thanks for all your help and advice. Oh, and painting the brick isn't an option either. Thank you!

Brown brick is perfect for making landscapes with red, pink, orange, white, and yellow flowers pop. If your house has gutters, get rid of the bushes. If you do not have gutters, trim the bushes back a little, and create a plant tier (bush, tall flowers, short flowers).

Consider hanging flower baskets for the front of the garage filled with a variety of morning glories and impatiens; white marble chips, light mulch or river rock for the beds around your house, and bright colored flowers that thrive in your growing zone.

Avoid GRAY rocks for your house, they will look drab next to the brown. However, large light brown river rocks or sandstone would be beautiful accents.

Avoid tall grasses in your flower beds - they will make your house look short and crowded. Avoid burgundy, maroon, and dark purple flowers if you can. If you must have them, use them VERY sparingly.

White trim and soffit ... not including the garage doors though.

For the landscaping, the blocky haphazardly arranged shrub are not flattering. I'd do an all new planting

Its supposed to go up today! I'm excited but very, very nervous. If you're interested I'll send you a pick when its done. We went with the Hearthstone Brown because of the reddish wood bedroom furniture, although after reading a couple of posts about other things it sounds like maybe I should have picked the bluer toned one instead. Any damage that is showing on your plants is mechanical - that means it came to be from shipping and other transport, handling or jostling. It is not the result of diseases or insects nor does it look like any watering issues. In reality, these plants look pretty darn good considering most big box stores do not take the slightest bit of care with their plants (hence the evidence of damage you are seeing). As to fertilizing, you need to identify your plants and then do a bit of research, as not all plants benefit from similar fertilization methods nor do they require it at the same time. Cacti and succulents have different needs than do tropical foliage plants and flowering houseplants (orchids, African violets, flowering gift plants) have yet another set of needs. In general, an all purpose liquid fertilizer used at 1/2 to 1/3 strength with every other watering is appropriate for most tropicals during their primary growing season (March through October) but you can get by with quite a bit less. I'd suggest you post this on the House Plants forum both to get accurate ID's on your plants and their advice as to when, how much and with what to best fertilize what you have.

Just like your house is brown, your shrubbery is all one shade of green. Perhaps some varied shades when you're ready to replace these.

Thank you for all of your thoughts about the home and yard. I agree with all of you. I knew when buying the home it would need a lot of help when it came to the yard and adding color to the home.

Dig Doug - that is amazing! Thank you so much for doing that. It gives me hope that I can make my house beautiful. I have thought about doing a flower bed around the flag pole and adding big rocks. I love it! Thank you for the great ideas. And I love the driveway. It needs to get replaced down the road so that is great to see how it adds a lot to the house. Thank you, thank you!

I'd pick a soft color that goes with the brick for the trim. A moss green or soft peach might be nice. Your house has nice lines, so it would enhance that.

Dig Doug does it again! He's pulled the focus from three garage doors to the right. The garage doors should remain brown; otherwise the emphasis will be on the garages, not the house. So anything to the right is the way to go. Landscaping usually does more for house than shutters, paint, or structural changes.
