Is my rug the right size?

We got a new 8' x 10' rug as shown in the pic with one of the furniture configurations. Would like to know if it's good, or if I should go a level bigger (9' x 12').

The constraint with going bigger is, the rug would infringe on to the walk way (as shown below). May be it can be done by moving the sofa up, but that would result in losing some space behind the sofa and moving everyone a bit closer to the high-placed tv.

I would place the couch facing the window and move the tv to the corner where the couch is now, on a small corner tv stand - or on the wall on an angled arm. The blue chair? Maybe in the corner next to the fireplace? Or next to the couch angled toward the tv (in its new location). The try the rug running the opposite way.

This is a tricky one. Ideally, the rug and couch should be centered with the fireplace. The rug size might be okay once you see if there is a better layout aesthetically. I don't care for the couch pushed into the corner. Not sure if this will work, but have you tried angling the couch and rug with the window & corner?

HI there! Have you considered an irregular shaped rug, smaller than what you have now? I understand why you have the sofa placed all the way to the window (to keep a clear walkway) but it looks awkward so close to the wall. Perhaps a smaller scale seating piece would fit better in that area which would allow you to center the seating a bit with the fireplace. And it would allow you to bring it a smidge forward. Seems whatever rug you choose, should have a perimeter of floor showing around it. What do you think?

raehelen--Thank you for the suggestion of thinking the use of the sink first! My current drop-in sink has such a large footprint but so little space inside the bowl that it never even occur to me to use it for anything other than washing hands and face :-( After reading your post, I went out to local LOWE's to study different sinks and found out they have Kohler Bancroft(17X14 insde)on clearance sale, so I grabbed 4 at a price better than the no-name sink. Now I just have to figure out the difference between Bancroft and Caxton and whether Bancroft is good:-) What do you know about them? palimpsest--I agree with you and raehelen that I would be better off with a single sink in the smaller bathroom. But this was the builder's set-up. To change to a single sink I probably has to change the base cabinet, that's too much trouble for a guest bathroom that was not used much at all. At least by using undermount sink, I will gain a few inches of counter space. .

I'd go bigger but what you show doesn't look ridiculously small. I think something 36" sq would be better. That's just 3" on each side. But realize trick is finding art in that size, when you've already found something you like.

Don't go overboard with the acryllic. There is plenty of it already. Remember the purpose of a "coffee" table is a place to set down your coffee cup. Therefore, I think it should have more substance than acryllic so your room doesn't look like a show room for an acryllic manufacturer. I wouldn't mind if it matched the silver sofa table either. Center it with the FP, and draw the seating to it. I think once your seating is gathered around the coffee table, the navy bench will fit nicely at the window, behind the two chairs. That's the front entry so the decor there should introduce you, your style and hint at what's to come in the adjoining spaces. Larger and with more personality would be my choice. Maybe a 5x7? If you want something easy to clean, check out Ruggables.

My thoughts are to pull the couch up so that half the couch is over lapping the rug. Also pull the chair in so the front legs are also on the rug, but angled towards the couch for easy conversation.

The rug only needs to be 2 feet wider than the sofa. It should float unattached to the wall and centered with the fireplace. It doesn't seem this room was designed for watching TV. The couch should be under the window as that is the only wall long enough for it.

First off, the rug looks like it will work if you adjust the furniture some. Try moving the sofa off of the wall and onto the rug. This will help with what looks off in the photo.

The rug will work with a few tweaks. You should have the same amount of hardwoods showing by the fireplace and the window, preferably 1-2 ft. It just looks cramped up against the window wall. Then pull the couch forward away from the wall. End tables either side with lighting. Is there built-ins beside the fireplace? Could the tv be placed there and move the whole seating area down to take up some of that wasted space behind the chair? As it is you are using only half the space available to you.

I definitely think you should move couch up and center wire fireplace and carpet .. also consider maybe a console table behind the couch with some added decor.
