Is it too early for butternut squash or spagetti squash?
Comments (4)Too early? In Atlanta I wouldn't think so. What are your soil temps running? And if you are seeing squash bugs already then it should be plenty warm. The soil temps up here in northern AR aren't quite warm enough yet - need a week of good warm weather. As for preventing squash bug damage - there are lots of posts here about how to control them that a search will pull up. IMO row covers and daily egg patrol work best unless you want to get into some of the chemical sprays. Adults can just be knocked off into a jar of hot soapy water and killed. Comments (6)The butternuts are in the Moschata species of squash and usually keep the longest and also sweeten up the latest. They have a very thin rind that cures to help them last so long. I let mine sit in the greenhouse for a month after harvesting, but thats in the fall. Direct summer sunshine may be a little too hot for them as it might cook the flesh. Find a not too sunny spot (dry if possible) and cure them for a month, but watch that they don't get frosted or eaten by mice....See MoreHarvest butternut squash now, or wait?
Comments (2)Well, the worst thing that could happen to them would be a freeze, so if that is a potential while you're gone, they should be picked. Otherwise, sort of a toss up, IMO. I think, if it were me, assuming they're reasonably mature, I'd go ahead and pick them....See MoreNewbie butternut squash harvesting
