Can I save a dying fiddle leaf fig/ficus lyrata?

I took this plant from a friend who purchased it at a grocery store... which is maybe where its problems began. It developed a lot of brown spots at the edges of the leaf and also some more central in the leaf. This makes me think it has been overwatered and has "root rot."(In photos the brown spots have mostly been trimmed away) The leaves are also turning a light green, brown color in some areas. In any case, this plant is not looking good.

At this rate, I plan to let the soil dry out and trim the roots and repot with fresh soil. Any other advice? I'm curious to test how resilient this plant is said to be.
