"Baretta St. Bourbon"

If you look this lovely found rose up on HelpMeFind Roses ...

. . . you will find some lovely photos, courtesy of Janelle Michel -- along with a historic illustration of a rose that someone thought this might be:

'Gloire de Margottin'

-- Hybrid Perpetual, 1887.

Does anyone know who suggested that identification?

I gather that Fred Boutin, who found "Baretta St. Bourbon" suggests it is a double version of 'Gloire des Rosomanes.' (which is mostly why I bought it).

I notice that 'Gloire des Rosomanes' is the only recorded parent of 'Gloire de Margottin' -- and that the illustration of GdM has leaves that are a dead match for the leaves of "Baretta St. Bourbon" (and pretty neat looking, too).

Also -- There is no listed source for 'Gloire de Margottin'. (And no photographs of it.) Does anyone know if it is extinct?

(Frankly, breeding records from those early days are "iffy." I suppose it is possible that 'Gloire de Margottin' really IS a double sport of 'Gloire des Rosomanes' ("Ragged Robin"). There's probably no way to know.)

This is one of the roses I ordered for the cemetery in Spring. I purposely sought out hard-to-find and "found" roses. I think you'll be happy to see what I managed to not only find, but in many cases, find on-sale. Some, from Rose Petals Nursery, were only $7. You can see the list in my post in the thread below:

How is baretta st. Bourbons Fragrance, I've read it has a strong old rose fragrance and after smelling gh I wondered if it was as near as strong as gh. I looked at it at the cemetery but it was still budded with no blooms yet. I'm starting to look for ogrs with fragrance now that my availible yard space is decreasing.

Thanks jeri. That sounds about the right height from what I remember. My grandmothers grew like a shrub and my mom had hers espaliered on a wire fence and it was probably 8 feet wide with the canes bent over :) Fig, I found mine at A Reverence for Roses nursery. Here is a picture of tge huge "band" they sent me. I measured it out of curiosity because I was so impressed w the size lol.

Also wanted to chime in on Bordeaux Mix—been using it for years, in extreme cases of disease as a winter spray. Teas made of high silica-based plants (I use lemongrass, because it grows like weed here) also help with disease, preventatively. I use this tea (often adding comfrey & seaweed for nutrients) in warm months. This is how I’m growing my fruit trees and have just added my roses to the tea gang when I noticed the roses sitting under the apples were the cleanest. Paul Neyron seemed to love the heat & humidity, was very prolific, and was intoxicatingly fragrant. For a little baby plant in a 1 gallon pot, he held up his giant blooms loud and proud above all the other babies. He also held his gorgeous pink shade in about 9 hours of sunlight. He’s still in a pot, but going into the ground in the next week or so, so I’ll update on how he likes that later. :-)

Benny Lopez is still beautiful because the heat doesn't seem to have affected its beautiful form, and I'm very impressed by this rose. Baretta St. Bourbon is obviously limp and suffering, and I hope that you'll soon have cooler temperatures and no more wind.

We recently potted it up Christopher, and it's really taken off. Next stop a spot in the ground. So far, it's a lovely, vigorous plant -- which I'd expect from a relative of "Ragged Robin".
