Low -growing border roses for Zone 10?
Comments (13)I've recently planted Borderer and Suitor, which grow to 18" and 12" acc to HMF. I generally find my roses grow to double the size they give. HMF says both roses only go to 9b, but I am in 10a or b. They're Australian bred, by the same man (Alister Clark) who bred Lorraine Lee, which HMF says also only goes to 9b, but Lorraine Lee used to be a stalwart in Sydney gardens, so I'm hopeful. Borderer is in flower, and very pretty. Suitor is smothered in a ridiculous number of buds. My camera broke, and I have a mobile that belongs in a museum, or I'd post a photo. Both are available in the US. Good luck with whatever you plant. Trish. Well, I take back what I said about Borderer. Today we had our first hot day of Spring (86), and the blooms that were so pretty this morning are now fried to a crisp. 3 or 4 of Suitor's buds have opened, and they are unaffected. Comments (13)I am curious as to whether you have already made a decision too. China roses love heat, and this one, Cramoisi Superior/Agrippina, keeps a nice shape and size in my garden, where things tend to become giants. HMF says it is good to zone 10. Jackie I would also vote for Grandmother's Hat - also HMF zone 10. I finally got one after Jeri told me that Annie's Annuals had it a few years ago. I love it!...See MoreEnglish roses for coastal CA, zone 10?
Comments (15)Well, there is 'The Prince,' but it's always been pretty scrawny here, and a VERY scanty bloomer. It doesn't rust or mildew, but I can't say much else for it. A far more prolific purple rose -- with NO disease in our climate is 'International Herald Tribune' which is a mighty bloomer, in a small package. After a number of years, it is finally at about 3.5 ft. This is another rose which prefers caution in pruning, most especially when young. It is the rose that all of Tom Carruth's purples go back to. Here it is: If you're talking about 'Louise Clements' -- It's not an Austin rose. It was bred by John Clements, from 'Graham Thomas.' (And G.T. grew 12-ft. canes in my garden.) I'm sorry, but I have not grown it. But 'Lillian Austin' is a moderately-sized Austin rose with excellent disease-resistance. (I've not grown it, either.)...See MoreWhat is most prolific coral climbing rose for zone 10?
Comments (6)Rosarium Uetersen is a gorgeous traffic stopper for me during its spring flush but only produces scarce blooms during summer with a smallish flush in fall. Mild green apple scent. Deadheading (to coach it to rebloom) can prove to be a major chore not helped by the savage thorns. I would classify it as a short climber, more spreading and inviting pegging than gaining height fast. In time it will grow to 6-8 ft I suppose. I'm not sure it doesn't need some winter cooler weather to coach it to bloom profusely in the spring. Zero mildew (lots of pressure, not many roses exhibit zero disease during high pressure times here) or blackspot (minimal pressure) here but it does get some rust in winter if old leaves are allowed to remain on the plant. Pegging and tying up, deadheading and getting rid of the older leaves in winter which refuse to abandon the plant have proved to be major undertakings which need something of a zen attitude and good clothing to accomplish.. Blood will be spilled....See More- 5 years ago
