Stone staircases and small children
Comments (8)I agree. Insist on a no running in the house rule, and hope for the best. Sometimes kids will manage to get hurt just being kids. You can wrap the entire stone staircase in bubble wrap, and they'll end up hurting themselves falling out of a tree. When my now 15yr old was 7, he asked to be signed up for tackle football. He was 37 lbs. I signed him up & my mom freaked out saying she didn't want a gorked out grandkid. The league had EMTs and an ambulance at the fields every practice, and the only time they were called into action the entire season was when a kid broke his arm falling off the playground tower. 13 teams with 25-30 kids apiece, aged 7-14(3 age divisions) were practicing that day, and the broken bone was on the playground. Stuff happens. The best way to ensure it doesn't is to insist on respecting the stairs and the house with a no running, and always use the handrail policy....See MoreWisteria on stairs, a problem?
Comments (6)Very bad idea to grow it on those wooden stairs! In addition to the issues gardengal raises, once the stems wrap around the wooden railings and open stair risers and the stems get thicker as they age a few years, you'd never be able to unwrap them to paint or do other maintenance on the stairs. Also, the foliage will get very dense and can act like a sail in the wind, adding stress to the stair structure. A few years ago our young Japanese wisteria, grown as a small tree, blew over on a windy day, taking down its (very inadequate) wooden support with it! Luckily, we knew its original support was a temporary situation so there was no damage done, but it did highlight how easy it would be for a wisteria to cause damage in a situation like the one in your picture. Do not grow it there! I have both a Japanese and a Chinese wisteria 'tree' and I love them - BUT I'm also aware of the strength and vigorous they have so don't treat them carelessly/lightly!...See MoreNeed source for a *modern* handrail (for staircase)...
Comments (16)So, I found a (semi) local iron fabricator guy who doesn't work with wood (I'd provide and finish that myself) but can make the sleeve brackets for my railing. They aren't exactly like the ones in the photo I posted (those had sleeve brackets with cutouts in them). He said he's not a fan of the cutouts, and that he'd make something more like this: He could do them in steel, painted any color, or in stainless steel and finished similarly to brushed nickel - or brass finished in a light satin. Do you guys think these would look good? Any input? If I don't go with this, I may just buy a few $8 standard boring wall brackets off the shelf at my local supplier, i.e.:...See MoreHelp! Comments (14)You've provided pictures that show a lot of traditional woodwork and built-ins (as well as a traditional style exterior), so it's kind of hard to picture it all gone except for the front door, which I'm not sure is even pictured in the photos. But if you like an eclectic look and already have sleek, modern kitchens and baths, there's nothing wrong with making your stairway match the other modern spaces. For me I think it would be too jarring to try mixing Tudor with super modern finishes (and I consider myself pretty eclectic), but I have friends who've mixed similarly disparate styles in their home and they're quite happy with the results. I agree that a designer to help with an overall plan would probably be a good investment....See MoreUser
