i hate wrestling with lights with a passion!!! i have had many years when 1/2 way thru the season(or sooner!), 1/2 a strand would go out... the mini lights are so cheap now that i tend to use 'fresh'(1-3 years old, max) strands for the tree and other difficult or highly visible areas. i just can't be bothered with messing with inexpensive lights anymore!!!! it's wasteful, but helps keep me sane during the holidays! i have also swapped out alot of outdoor sets with LED sets too...have 'recycled' old or 1/2 working sets at HD. i bought one of those light fixing guns one year and had terrible success with it---i tried to use it on our icicles and ended up returning it-don't know if the gun was faulty or if our lights were beyond repair...

Anything really goes these days but if it were my house, I would stay with cool metals, like silver, nickel, pewter, stainless and of course black. You can mix and match these throughout your house in light fixtures and cabinet/door hardware. I agree about staying away from the golds and bronze.

Hopefully whom ever put in the your hall light left extra wire in the electric box in the ceiling and you will not have to rewire. Look around your Lowes or Home depot they might have some gold chain. Even though gold is coming back in style, sometimes it is still hard to find and so many different colors of gold. Or if your husband installed it maybe he saved the remaining chain. You picked a nice fixture. Look for something that complements it. From your pictures the foyer looks open to the living area. I would just go smaller. The shadows Sam is talking about, is the shadow the light casts on the ceiling and walls when it is on. Yours is fine. I seen one light shadow that looked like a boob on the ceiling. lol Oh yes I am for easy maintenance and comfort.
