New house - classic 90s styling - need help!
Comments (38)Nice house! I think that golden oak and brass fixtures will soon make a comeback, because dark wood and silver/stainless have been popular for so long. I don't think the peachy wall color in your house looks good with the oak, though, because it makes the oak look so yellow. Before you paint the trim and window blinds, try painting the walls. Our walls are a pale khaki/green, so light it reads as a neutral, and it looks great with warm wood tones. I've also seen nice warm grays look good with golden wood. On the other hand, as much as I love wood, I think the bookshelves look odd in that spot, mostly because they appear to be floating above the baseboard heater. I think that would be the best wall for the TV, so you may have to change the shelves to make that work, or move/remove some of them. Can the dining room be closed off completely, with a big arched doorway? With such open space in the other rooms, it might be nice to have a more intimate space for contrast, and to have less sound bouncing around when you talk and laugh at the dinner table. Can the ceiling in that room be lowered? If not, I do like the grill idea suggested above for the openings to the DR. Lastly, before you shop for furniture I would make many copies of a to-scale floor plan and try moving little paper pieces of furniture around to make sure you can make it work before you buy it....See Morefireplace dilemma & wall of mirrors
Comments (14)April, thanks for the photos. It gives me a better idea of your style. At this point, as far as the fireplace, or any other changes, I recommend having an overall plan. Design is more holistic and, if you don't mind, could we see -photos of the other parts of this room -photos of other rooms (and information on what you are not changing) -furniture you have and are keeping My biggest concern right now is the furniture arrangement. The fireplace is in an awkward place. It might be difficult to arrange furniture, especially if you have a tv........unless it goes on the mirror wall.....an argument in your favor to remove the mirrors. Hello, Groveraxle's dogs A note abut live plants: being a townhouse, I don't know if you have much influence, but that tree outside needs its canopy raised or I think you are not going to have much light in that room. Comments (15)Here is an idea for you. Minimal framing and it would open up the kitchen space: 1. tear out the pantry and the internal walls of the powder room and the powder room sink. 2. Frame in a pocket door and solid wall for the powder room, reorienting the door. 3. change up the sink in the powder room for a very minimal thin sink hung on the wall across from the toilet and change the toilet to a round bowl that takes up less space. 4. Frame in a new wide archway to the dining room that is next to the stairwell 5. eliminate the existing door to the dining room 6. counters along the exterior wall with sink under window and cooktop on exterior wall for venting 7. countertop along dining room wall anchored by a double oven 8. refrigerator and pantry along opposite wall from sink - can make pantry depth of standard depth fridge to save on appliance cost - pantry can be doors with shelves all around or cupboards with pull outs. 9. island with 42" space to sink area and aligned with dining room opening 10. not to worry about work triangle with fridge because island becomes prep space see sketch:...See More60s Ranch Remodel Layout Dilemma - Huge fireplace, small kitchen
