Help Decorate Family Room

My family and I just moved into a new home. We painted the walls with Benjamin Moore's "Revere Pewter", stained the floors with Minwax's "Provincial", and purchased a sectional couch in a charcoal/slate color. The window treatments, tv stand, and throw blanket are all a dark brown color. The ceiling is vaulted. What color rug, type of artwork, and other ideas will make our family room feel more complete?

Since you watch TV or read, could I be so bold as to suggest a jersey knit throw? The brown one looks nice, but I'm not sure it goes well with your color scheme. Maybe a fun pattern with some grays in it? Most of my throws are doubled sided, so you can flip it over as your mood changes. But they accent a room well, and there's nothing better to wrap up in for a little reading or TV time.

My techy brother is visiting me. He says that you could mount a screen on the wall opposite the patio doors (get a motorized one with a remote) and then mount a projector over the patio doors. The screen is only visible when you are watching something, if you paint or otherwise cover up the casing, and you can build a box to camoflage the projector. It may sound wacky, but he has a projector and screen mounted to the ceiling in his family room and you really don't notice them when they're not in use. If you don't want to go that route, could you get one of those TV lift cabinets where the TV is hidden inside and then rises up when you need it? That could go under the small window. Even if the cabinet blocked the bottom few inches of the window, it might look nicer than having the TV block the window. Other than that, it does look as if the corner where the TV is now or the wall where the mirror is are your best bets. If you floated some furniture in a L-shaped configuration, either two sofas or a sectional, you could take advantage of the views and the TV screen.

I agree with Cawaps. Your choices are lovely and would look good, but I wouldn't call it a "farmhouse" style at all. Most of the farmhouses I have been to, (I live in a rural area) have huge old overstuffed furniture, emphasis "colonial." Comfy but hardly chic. But that is purely semantics, I love your choices so go for it. However, I too have a tiny living room and I don't have a center coffee table, and do not miss it. One of my chairs has an ottoman which I could put a tray on, but never do. I keep my books in a basket next to the chair and my magazines in a basketweave tray with sides under the couch. I have some collapseable TV trays I could set up if I ever wanted to serve any food in there, but since my living room is next to the dining room, that's not likely. I have side tables for the inevitable cup of tea or wine. Get a gorgeous rug to "tie the room together" and use the side tables and get some kind of ottoman for the chair. You can get ones that open up for storage too, they are great!

Would you have it in your budget to hire a professional to come up with optional layouts and furniture suggestions. If not, you should work with an online room planner and really consider your family's needs and a few seating/working areas. The paint color can really be the last things to consider, based on what you have selected in terms of art, drapery, couch, etc. and I would paint the trim at the same time as you are doing the walls. Look at inspiration pictures to help (not necessarily with layout but seating options, accessories, bookcases, desk/office needs, color combinations) and based on your taste for modern farmhouse, you may want to check Joanna Gaines' site for inspirations. If you want to add a bit more color, you could try adding some different pillows, a new throw (white or yellow), and a different rug. Here is are suggestion:

Your sectional takes up a massive amount of visual space as does the TV and stand. The rugs njmomma suggests are a great way to balance out so much dark upholstered furniture and bring in some pattern and color, which you can pull from the walls and golden floor. Dark brown is going to addway too much darkness to the room. Consider complementary curtains in white and gray or white and gold or exactly match the wall color.

--Remove the fake plant, or if it's real put it near a window in another part of the house.

--Get a much, much longer low console in white that goes all the way across from the length of the sofa. This one is dark wood, but you should get one in a light color. Note how the coffee tables, rug, art, pillows, and curtains lighten the room even with a very dark large sofa and big TV screen. Aim for this mix of light and dark. Replace the ottoman with a coffee table set up on legs as shown below. Comfy looking as it is, there too much upholstered sectional. Remove a piece.
