trying to block a dusk to dawn light on water
Comments (1)hi carolyn i'd go with some kind of cedar if it were my place... or maybe a couple nice paw paw trees....but i don't know your winter situation... cheers and good luck.. diggy...See MoreExterior lights - on @ dusk off @ dawn
Comments (6)I don't like the look of a lot of the fixtures with photocells made into them, so DH went to one of the big box stores (Lowe's, I think), and purchased screw-in adaptors for our garage lights. The adaptors make the lights come on at dusk, and are adjustable so the lights go off after a certain number of hours. We don't need lights on all night, so typical dusk to dawn adaptors seemed wasteful to me. I didn't know the type of adaptors we ended up even existed, but we like them very much. Ours are set right now so that the lights stay on until around 1:00, after the teenagers are home. Come summer, and much later sunsets, we can easily shorten the number of hours they'll burn. I don't think the adaptors cost very much, and they let me get the feature that I wanted in the fixtures that I really wanted....See MoreReplacing a switch with a photocell (dusk till dawn) sensor.
Comments (5)First of all, where is/was the switch? Where does the red wire, connected to the gold terminal of the receptacle, come from? A switch or the breaker? The wire connected to the silver terminal of the receptacle should be white, not red, and connected with the other neutrals. You would not want the receptacle to be controled by the photosensor. Its amperage rating is not sufficient. To install the photosensor, its black lead connects to the hot leg from the breaker panel. The white lead connects to the neutrals from both the panel and the lights. The red lead connects to the hot leg going to the lights. I would have a switch on the hot (black) lead going to the photosensor in order to turn the lights off should they occasionally be not wanted on after dark....See Moredawn to dusk yard light
Comments (10)Also check the orientation of the sensor, it has to be pointing at the sun to work properly Actually, if possible it is preferred that a photo eye point away from the sun (north) in most cases. Most will state this in the directions. Obviously, if the eye will be pointing at a wall lighted by the fixture, into headlights on a road, or a streetlight, you need to make adjustments. Personally, I operate yard lights from a photo eye mounted on the house, usually mounted under the roof overhang somewhere and encourage my customers to do the same....See Morecat_ky
