Previously I would just right click on the picture and click on the save picture as in the menu. That doesn't work any more. Anytime I try to download a picture from any where I get the popup box mentioned above. Never did an email.

I'm not proficient using Windows so this might not help. But it's something to check...

Now I'm confused. In the beginning you said " ones that my family members emailed to me), get the following popup." Now you're saying " Never did an email." Is this about pics being included in your emails or not? Are you simply trying to download pics on various web sites? If yes...it may not be a problem. Some sites have begun to disallow the direct downloading of images.

What happens if you save them somewhere other than the pictures file like the desktop? Mary

Sorry for being confusing when I said "never did an email." I meant I had never tried emailing a picture to myself from Facebook. And it is about all pictures from any source, azinoh.

acraftylady, never thought about trying to download to my desktop. Will try that and see what happens.

Doesn't even have to be the desktop you can create a new folder and try that. Mary

@acraftylady: Created a new folder on my desktop and tried to put picture in it, got the same message box. However, I decided to try saving a picture from Facebook to my external drive and it worked. Now I am really puzzled.

Have you tried turning off "Controlled Folder Access" at least temporarily to see if that's the culprit?

You can always toggle it back on if you're uncomfortable leaving it off.

If it works when you toggle it off, it might still work after toggling it back on. Or not.

Either way you will have either found or eliminated one possible cause.

It works now. I turned off the Controlled Access Folder. Thank you all so very much. Do I need to turn it back on and just toggle it on and off when I need to do so?

I'd probably turn it back on and see if it still works.

(I can't find the link but I read somewhere that someone was able to turn it back on without messing it up.)

Maybe toggling it off and then back on fixes folder permissions or something like that? I'm just guessing but it costs nothing to try.

If that doesn't fix it, the next Windows update might... or might not. :-)

I only briefly read about it but if I understood correctly it helps protect files from being encrypted by those ransom viruses.

If you don't feel at risk or are willing to accept that risk, you don't have to turn it back on.

Thank you. I do feel safer turner it on since I was attacked by a ransom virus earlier this year and lost everything on my computer.

Foud out I will have to continue toggling on and off. When "on," pictures would not "save as." Sure wish that toggling off then on had fixed the issue permanently.

I thought maybe you could customize it but it looks like you can only add additional folders, not remove any of the default folders.

One roundabout way might be to stick a flash drive in an unused USB port and (for convenience) leave it there. Set your browser to download to the flash drive.

After downloading, you can move/copy the files/images anywhere you want.
