Advice on color for front door and shutters
Comments (7)I'm thinking the shutters would look good black. Plus, those dormer windows should probably have a black line around the white trim to sort of point them up. Are you getting a door with glass panes across the top? Small squares, maybe 3 or 4 across the top? If so, that might look nice in black also, or perhaps a deep "jet" green. You need to change that single light into a pair of lantern, one on either side. Your house is an adorable little classic cape, and I really like it. If you are in the northeast where you have a snowy winter, I also suggest that you replace the narrow steps and wrought iron railings. Widen the steps to the full width of the stoop, and then have the railings come straight down from the brick wall all the way to the ground. You will need some railings to hold on to with the snow piling up there. Keep the wroughtiron black. Neat as a pin. Comments (15)Lovely home! A color consult on site will be so helpful to you, that's great! Too bad your photo wasn't a bit clearer to see more detail. You might want to add a closeup photo of your stone and brick to your next comment. If you prefer to keep the shutters, I would look to the mortar, stone and brick for a neutral, maybe a warm grey/brown that just melts in and does not stand out. I'd use the same color for the shakes and two vents, the light trim will then be highlighted. I assume your front door is stained wood, not paint. I would avoid green because of the reddish/green 'Christmas' palette of home, sidewalk, landscaping and grass. Of course you didn't ask, but I gotta say...hire a pro to prune your shrubs back to their natural relaxed form with hand pruners. No power trimmer. Keep them below windows, or prune the burgundy ones to a more open, not tight form but no higher. Can't tell what they are, weigela?...See MoreFront door and shutter color
Comments (10)@cat_ky - completely agree - I've never liked the current color. So now that we need to paint, it's a good time to switch it up. Here are the HOA guidelines - "The decision whether to approve each application will be based on a judgment as to whether the proposed change would be noticeably inconsistent or visually incompatible with the originally established color scheme of the applicant's property and surrounding neighborhood. Factors considered in this review will include the following: Proposed colors must be visually indistinguishable from the original colors on one or more units of the same model located in the same neighborhood, and must correspond to the location of these original colors. For example, a proposed change of door color will be compared to the color of other doors in the same neighborhood. Proposed color changes must not reverse or alter the degree of contrast between the unit's original colors. For example, a light color against a dark background must not be replaced with a dark color against a light background. An area originally a single color may not be painted different colors, nor may adjacent, different colored areas be painted the same color. Proposed color changes must not alter the original degree of consistency between units in the same neighborhood. For example, where all shutters and doors on a row or section of town homes were originally painted identically, then none may be repainted a different color." There is not a prescribed list of colors other than it needs to similar to the surrounding homes -- which generally have various beige trim colors and a mix of red, blue, black, green and brown doors and shutters. Some do have black shutters and a reds doors....See MoreNeed help with exterior house colors; shutters, front door.
Comments (4)Very first impression is there are way too many narrow shutters and none fit the windows properly. What is not taken advantage off is the mill work over the windows. If painted the white of the windows, the windows would be lovely without the shutters. Shiny red front door….....See Morebrentandellenparker
