How long would you hold out on tomatoes??
Comments (29)Well, I think I remember them calling it a blight, can't remember if it was the early or late blight, but it affected tomato crops throughout MB and I believe possibly farther out too. It was all over the local news, and the 'experts' claimed that it was a soil borne bacteria that splashed up onto the plants from either rain or irrigation. They claimed only sterilization of the soil and crop rotation would alleviate the problem. I'm assuming that the growth of the bacteria or fungus initially was due to having the right type of weather conditions in the spring/early summer. Whatever the cause, this is the reason why I pick my maters as soon as they are a decent size....I'm not taking any chances :^). I've also heard about calcium benefiting tomatoes. So from somewhere, I heard to throw out all your eggshells into the garden and work them in and they release their calcium into the soil. I've also used crushed eggshells to sprinkle around hostas to prevent slugs. I too, gave my tomatoes a couple of hits of Miracle Gro during the season and this year used Myke when planting. The plants ended up being a really good size.....and produced a decent amount of fruit too. Laurie Here is a link that might be useful: tomato diseases...See MorePesto Perpetuo- Basil all year long
Comments (13)Hello, I recently bought some pesto basil perpetuo from Burpee. The plants arrived the other day and they were in horrible shape. The leaves were ALL damaged, had brown spots on them and had many broken leaves. I removed the worst of the damage, but one of the plants now looks dead and the other two aren't far behind. The tops of the plants were bent over to make them fit into the shipping container, which was plastic and several leaves were mashed where the container was snapped closed on them. Is there anything I can do to save the two that are still alive? I am appalled at the horrible quality of the plants Burpee sent to me. I expected healthy, compact plants, not these leggy pitiful little plants. The link posted above--I went and looked in the links and couldn't find the basil perpetuo there. What should I look for in their catalogs? Thanks, Noss...See MoreHow Long Can You Refrigerate No Lemon/Vinegar Salsa?
Comments (12)Realistically you can keep it as long as you are comfortable with the degree of risk posed to you. But longer than the tested and approved 3-5 day limit can't be safely recommended. Even cooked, bacteria are present and will continue to develop even in the fridge because of the low pH - chilling only slows the process. So why not just add some lemon or lime juice to it and give it a longer, safer fridge life? Or if that doesn't appeal to you then make and freeze it. Comments (18)I never buy bread that comes in plastic bags - when I do buy bread, it comes in paper type bags that are always open at one end. I mostly buy La Brea Bakery bread, but Gelson's has their own bread that they make that is excellent as well. There's a bakery in the mini-mall with my bank, and I buy bread there occasionally as well. They don't have the best selection, and they don't have pumpernickel, which is why I have to make that bread myself. In fact, I need to make more, but I'm going to wait until Monday because DB's birthday is this week-end. Now that I have a good oven, I will be buying less bread. I reuse the plastic bags that I put onions and garlic in, and I store bread in those. Lars...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
