LG steam vs a Speed Queen laundry center
Comments (5)Hi MizLizzie, did you decide what machines to buy? I have a narrow and shallow laundry closet with an 80s version of a Thin Twin in it at a rental property, and I am debating whether to get the Speed Queen laundry center because it is pretty pricey but huge for such a depth (most shallow washers are 1.5 to 2 cubic feet, the SQ is 3.3). All other frontloaders are about 30 inches deep and stick out way too far. If you have the space, you should put in the full size W/D because it is easier to find a replacement down the road. Also, you can get a much larger tub size, up to 7 cubic feet. I can tell you that the steam dryers (I have an Electrolux WaveTouch at home) spray water into the drum as they tumble and it is better than putting a damp cloth in there because the dampness is better distributed. I have no use for the steam washer setting though. Hope this helps!...See MoreRecommendations needed for basic Top Loader washer
Comments (10)White porcelain is slightly higher quality, as it's a heavier coating. However, all the materials are of accordingly "lesser robustness" nowadays. When you consider that an upper-middle Whirlpool washer (model LDA7800W2) cost $369 in 1976, and you're looking at machines 34 years later at $379 and $329, something has to give to allow it. :-) Whirlpool has been producing this direct-drive mechanical design (with a few changes along the way) for over 26 years under the Whirlpool and Kenmore brands. KitchenAid, Roper, Estate, Inglis, and now Maytag, Amana, and Admiral. Some of the model/brand lines were slightly more durable (such as KitchenAid when they carried laundry, with heavier motors, porcelain tops and bronze bearings on the dryers). One or two Maytag models have stainless steel baskets. Otherwise, A = B = C....See MoreNeed a good basic washer & dryer
Comments (2)There is price and there is cost. The price of the Admiral may low, but for my money, I'd buy a Speed Queen set which is priced higher initially, but is built to last longer than any other brand on the market. Speed Queen also has the longest warranty of all the brands....See MoreLooking for reliable basic TL washer.
Comments (5)Hi, Don't be too discouraged, there are still some very good basic top loaders about. Kenmore and Whirlpool are still a pretty good buy. When you consider the volume of washers that are manufactured and sold, the failure rate of new machines within the first 5 years is in the low single digit percentile. Quality control is pretty good that way. Whilst a lot of concerns on this site are legitimate, they do not necessarily represent the broader consumer experience. Just remember that when you pay two or three hundred dollars for a washer, you are paying a very reasonable price. You can't expect the kind of construction quality that you got 20 or 30 years ago for the same cost. Yet, you may still be lucky enough to get a washer that might give you more than 10 years of trouble-free use. Top dollar doesn't guarantee longevity either and probably never has. Getting a machine that will go the distance and beyond depends on so many other variables besides construction quality. How a washer is used (or abused), where and how it is housed, whether or not it gets some regular basic maintenance and cleaning, to the quality of the water and detergent that are used in it, all these factors determine trouble-free operation as well as durability. My personal recommendation would be Speed Queen. I've just replaced one that ran for 20 trouble-free years with a brand new SQ washer. They are still constructed with lots of heavy metal gears, good quality materials and standard non-electronic dials. They are a little pricier though than most other US brands. Then again, this new washer of mine may not see out 10 years of operation. I certainly hope that it will. The biggest problem is to actually make a choice. There are so many products out there. Lots of them identical, others quite different - so it really all comes down to the agony of choice. Another matter to consider is a company's product support and customer service reputation. Also, purchase your washer from a store that has a money-back policy or a reputation for giving excellent customer satisfaction. Enough already, this post is longer than originally intended. Good luck and let us know what you are buying. Here is a link that might be useful: Speed Queen Appliances...See Moreghatta
