Basic GE washer and dryer
Comments (2)all i can contribute is that I wouldn't bother spending an extra dollar to get the steam function on either washer or the dryer. I have both and it just isn't all that useful. handy maybe, for the drier, but no essential. to refresh wrinkled clothes in the dryer just spritz them with a spray bottle of clean water. furthermore, the little bit of steam generated during a wash cycle is like spitting into the ocean......See MoreA Basic Washer Search No computer electronics
Comments (5)The vast majority of machines that LOCK during operation have a button to PAUSE the cycle and UNLOCK the door. Pressing Pause again resumes the cycle. Some will not pause/unlock for safety reasons if they have an internal water heater and the temp has reached potentially-scalding levels, but I doubt a "basic" Kenmore would have that restriction. Some may also drain and cancel the cycle if left paused for too long, also as a safety factor....See MoreSelecting a washing machine - LG vs Huebsch(Speed Queen)
Comments (1)I am not the best person to answer your questions, but I did want to tell you that while I've been happy with the capacity of my LG (I have a top loading HE, 3 years old), the rotor (motor part) has gone out two times. LG's customer service has been great though- they are sending a tech out next week to fix the rotor, and they did so the first time. The motor is covered for 10 years. One question is, how far out do you live? Can a tech get to your house easily? My feeling is that maybe SQ is easier to fix than LG, although I don't know. To get my LG fixed, I've had to use the repair people that LG contracts with. One thing you might do is ask the appliance people who you would have to get out to fix the LG if there are any problems (if you want to get it fixed under warranty). Same with SQ. How do you feel about the capacity of your Bosch? Go to You Tube and look at some videos of Speed Queen and LG- you'd be surprised at how many videos there are of people doing their laundry there! You can get an idea of how much a SQ can hold and see if it looks okay for you. The large capacity is nice for bedding and towels, but I don't have 6 kids :) Honestly though, I've been happy with the LG for large loads, but for small and medium loads, the washer seems to have to rebalance those loads all the time- which it does by adding more water and redistributing the clothing I think this wastes more water than regular top loaders! I also find the cloths get all tangled because there is no spindle in the middle. Maybe I have a lemon, I don't know if other machines do this or not. For my 2 adult household, this is more drum capacity than I need. Do you do all your laundry together, or separate into colors? The LG seems to do best if it's stuffed to the brim (at least in my machine, I can't speak for others). I'm currently looking at getting a SQ!...See MoreLooking for reliable basic TL washer.
Comments (5)Hi, Don't be too discouraged, there are still some very good basic top loaders about. Kenmore and Whirlpool are still a pretty good buy. When you consider the volume of washers that are manufactured and sold, the failure rate of new machines within the first 5 years is in the low single digit percentile. Quality control is pretty good that way. Whilst a lot of concerns on this site are legitimate, they do not necessarily represent the broader consumer experience. Just remember that when you pay two or three hundred dollars for a washer, you are paying a very reasonable price. You can't expect the kind of construction quality that you got 20 or 30 years ago for the same cost. Yet, you may still be lucky enough to get a washer that might give you more than 10 years of trouble-free use. Top dollar doesn't guarantee longevity either and probably never has. Getting a machine that will go the distance and beyond depends on so many other variables besides construction quality. How a washer is used (or abused), where and how it is housed, whether or not it gets some regular basic maintenance and cleaning, to the quality of the water and detergent that are used in it, all these factors determine trouble-free operation as well as durability. My personal recommendation would be Speed Queen. I've just replaced one that ran for 20 trouble-free years with a brand new SQ washer. They are still constructed with lots of heavy metal gears, good quality materials and standard non-electronic dials. They are a little pricier though than most other US brands. Then again, this new washer of mine may not see out 10 years of operation. I certainly hope that it will. The biggest problem is to actually make a choice. There are so many products out there. Lots of them identical, others quite different - so it really all comes down to the agony of choice. Another matter to consider is a company's product support and customer service reputation. Also, purchase your washer from a store that has a money-back policy or a reputation for giving excellent customer satisfaction. Enough already, this post is longer than originally intended. Good luck and let us know what you are buying. Here is a link that might be useful: Speed Queen Appliances...See Moreghatta
