Ok I am not blaming everything on the contractor. Was recomended from my parents that live in a middle to upper middle class neighberhood. He lives in the same subdivision. Was told he does Kitchen and bath remodels in the area. Got one other quote from a company that specializes in repairing water damage for 1800 but that included materials. I'm in my 20s with a limited budget to spend. On the first day he was working he was complaining that I have cement based plaster walls, and that the job would take longer then he had expected. I told him if he underbid the job to talk to me about it and we could work something out. I'm not trying to screw anybody over. I know my bathroom isn't going to win any bueaty awards just wanted something functional. I would have been more then willing to work with him. If you underbid a job doesn't mean you rush through and half ass it. He saw everything before he gave me the price. Anyway he came back over and made it a little better. Finished grouting and caulking, and popped out and replaced some of the really bad tiles. Still not really satisfied with the work. I guess I learned a valuable lesson today about hiring someone to work on your house. It's just funny how everybody gets so preachy like they never made a mistake. Also, I live in the Midwest cost of living is very low. 700 was just in labor. I bought the thinset durock tile grout.

Always always get a signed contract that explicity states the scope of the job, start and end dates, the exact make and model of every major component, a quality statement in regards to incidentals , that all work will be done by properly licensed trades, that all spare material will be removed, and that all required permits will be obtained. Also specify that the all work be done according to applicable and local codes. Insist the contractor have workers compensation and liability insurance, And is licensed in your jurisdication. Specify the final payment will not be made until the job is completed and passed inspection by the AHJ. That won’t help you now however. I would insist that they complete the job to your satsifaction . If they don’t then you could potentially have AHJ inspect it. If he/she is cooperative they might tell you what is wrong. And you get someone else to fix and take this first bunch of clowns to court if you need to. However if it is to bad they could order you to rip it and start over. The structure is new. We had him build an addition on to our house and add this bathroom. I'm pretty sure I know why the surround is out of whack from the studs, in the contract we specified that he add backing to the tub structure to allow us to add grab bars in the future and to have something to screw the shower door into so it is not just attached to the fiberglass. I expected him to add a stud on each side where the shower door would attach so he could screw into that, and I expected he would glue/adhere plywood on to the back of the fiberglass tub surround before he installed it to attach the grab bars according to manufacturer instructions. He did neither of those, he screwed a piece of plywood between the studs and the tub to attach those, which is moving the tub flange away from the wall by that thickness. So now that that is all there, is there a way for this to be finished and not look like crap? I wanted to get opinions before I discussed it with the contractor because we have complained several times about the quality of his work and I want to know if this is fixable before I bring it up to him.

That can depend a bit on what the language is in your contract. Things like what details are included in the job, does it specify the floor leveling or anything like walls being plumb. Do you have approval or some sort of sign off before grouting starts? What is the waterproofing going on under all of that, what is the detailing for that? Do you have a building inspection requirement for making sure the plumbing is right and the drain tests went well- and if so, did it pass prior to tiling starting? If not, that might be moot.
