I recall reading news about how the 911 services in CO were getting calls from people who did too much.

Hubby once ate an entire chocolate bar in one sitting, not realizing it was infused. It was something like 8-10 doses at once. He said it was horrible!

One of my sons once told my other son..his brother that he O.D'd on pot..his brother laughed and years later is still laughing. Its become a sort of private joke between them. Just not so private since I know about it.

Yes, you can eat too much cannabis and have a bad day. No, you will not die from too much cannabis. In fact, no one has ever died from eating or smoking cannabis. If you DO eat or smoke too much, just lay down and wait until it's over. I've eaten ganja brownies in Negril that made me lose a couple of days because they were so strong. But with my Colorado cookies, you'd have to eat at least 4 or 5 to really get duffed.

There's a HUGE difference in the amount of THC and CBDs in the cannabis that's being grown today. Back in the 60s and 70s, if you smoked an entire spliff by yourself, you would take in around 1mg to 2mg of THC (think Thai stick or Maui Wowi). The stuff you can buy legally in a dispensary today will yield around 50mg of THC in that same spliff.

How many of us made Alice B Toklas brownies back in those days by just dumping an ounce of Mexican/Colombian/Jamaican ganja into the brownie mix? If you ate a good-size chunk, you got wasted for the afternoon. Well, if you dumped an ounce of what's currently available into that mix and ate that same size chunk, you'd probably spend a day or two on your back.

The real positive result from all this is not the increased THC (unless you just want to party) but the increased CBD content. Cannabidiol (CBD) is the medical component of the cannabis plant. The amount of medical wonder that CBDs have performed is the true value of this plant. I have bladder cancer. In the past, I had two malignant tumors removed. Since I started using cannabis strains that are super high in CBDs, I have had one benign tumor removed and no others have formed.

When I lived in Florida, I baked for dozens of chemo patients and a couple of Parkinson's patients. Cannabis helped relieve the stress of chemo, returned their appetites, and for the Parkinson's patients - ended their tremors. So wake and bake my friends; you just might be saving your life.

Ricky, I believe that marijuana has some valid uses for patients that are currently taking pharmaceuticals. I have a daughter and a grandson with seizure disorders and another daughter with chronic pain issues. Marijuana has got to be better for them than opiods and nervous system depressants. Michigan's November election will have a marijuana legalization issue on the ballot, we'll see what happens.

I believe it will need to be strictly regulated and enforced, like alcohol is, to avoid driving accidents and the like. Maybe we could tax it and fix the roads, now there's an idea...

Anyway, I'm 63 and have never eaten/smoked/consumed marijuana and I doubt that I'd start now, but people with valid health issues seem to find it extremely helpful for some issues. Who knows what the future will bring in the way of health struggles, though?

And, for the record, I LOVE Oreos, they are the only commerical cookie I'd ever consider eating.

The Cooking Forum has come a long way in 20 years. I can't imagine this post even just a few years ago.

Have never been into Pot not even back in the 60's. But my son has a prescription and it is what he uses for his chronic pain.

Come October it will be legal in Canada for anyone over 18.

The last time I did it was in 1975. Since I had a kid I decided my responsibility to him was foremost and didn't want to do anything that would keep me from being responsible, also didn't want to take the chance of landing up in jail or losing custody of him, etc. Back then the law was ruthless about it. But I do remember that even though the pot back then was nothing like the pot nowadays, (that's what everyone says) I really got wasted on it. And I don't remember smoking more than one joint at a time. So if it is that strong now I really can't see how people can function on it. Also, I'm totally confused about this medical marijuana deal. When they were trying to get it legalized here in Florida they kept saying "medical marijuana doesn't get you high, it doesn't contain THC". And I never could understand why people were so against it if that's the case. Why not let people use it if it helps them? So now it's said that the CBD oil in it is actually what helps. Well that stuff is being sold all over the place here and you don't need a prescription. And it is very expensive. I tried it on my dog for thunder anxiety, it didn't do anything for it. So I decided to try it for my arthritis, didn't do a thing for it. And it tastes AWFUL. So now my opinion is that it's just a big fad. Ricky - if you have genuinely seen good results then I applaud you if you are indeed helping these people but I'm just a tiny bit skeptical. Personally if a person wants to relax and enjoy some recreational pot who cares? Why is it any different from a martini or a glass of wine?? But I don't think a person should be able to be under the influence of it while driving, taking care of kids, doing a job that requires all their faculties, etc.

About 20 years ago I made a batch of brownies. I had no idea what I was doing; as I recall lightly sautéed an eighth in vegetable oil and then used that, unfiltered, with a box of brownie mix. Ate one and was out of my mind the entire night. Told people at the bar about it, no one believed me, I gave some away and after people came back with their own stories I couldn’t give any more away. That’s my first and last experience with eating it.

That said, I have a very low tolerance. The stuff these days, I feel good with about a half a hit. Full hit and I’m sitting in a corner. I miss the days of sitting around and enjoying a tasty joint. I just can’t do that anymore. Some call it progress.

rita - Cannabis is a fad as old as human life. And if you bought a product that didn't work, it was a fake to begin with. That's the biggest problem - people are selling fake medical cannabis products; it was bound to happen. Buy ONLY from licensed dispensaries or from people you know and trust. This is especially true when it comes to CBD products and in particular - RSO Rick Simpson Oil. I'm not going to get into a long diatribe about any of this here; we're supposed to be discussing cooking. Google what makes your curious.

Ann, when I crossed the border into British Columbia in 1978 (I was on a bus at that time), the Canadian border official (who was quite old) asked me how I was on the marijuana issue - was I a light, moderate, or heavy user? I think he asked me this because my passport was issued in San Francisco, and I told him that I have never tried marijuana at all, but he kept pressuring me on that question. At that time, if you admitted to being even a light user, they would deny you admission into Canada, but I was not that stupid although I had friends who were. When I crossed in 1976, I had a much nicer (and younger) border official, and I've never had problems at the Vancouver airport. The worst border officials I've had were in Laredo, Texas.

I have difficulty with all the hoo-ha associated with cannabis. It is no different than having a drink or two before dinner. Obviously having a couple of stiff martinis after work and jumping into a car to drive home is not a wise choice.......nor is smoking a joint and doing the same thing. States where it has been legalized do reap huge tax benefits and do regulate and monitor its sale just as they do with liquor.

Cannabis infused edibles tend to be more potent than smoking the stuff as eating changes the active ingredient (THC) into a stronger, more potent substance (11-hydroxy-THC). So you don't need to eat much to achieve the same degree of intoxication (for lack of a better word) than you would by smoking or inhaling the vapors.

And the medical benefits are pretty well documented but like any medication, can affect different folks differently.

Ricky, that's a very interesting appliance. The copy is very cagey. It talks about other kinds of herb, besides Herb, but I can't tell if it's serious or just trying to stay legal in all jurisdictions. OTOH, considering all the variables of processing medicinal herbs at home, anything that can standardize the process can only help, right?

It's an amazing time-saver! Prior to the MBM, I had to stand and stir a ganja/butter/water mixture for 6 hours on a pot on the stove. This rascal is set it and forget it. Two hours to infused butter. Yeah, the cleanup is a bit longer, but I don't have to stand over the stove for six hours any more!

As far as other herbs go... I've never tried it, but a friend of mine uses it to infuse cilantro, mint, and chives into butter (not at all at the same time, though.) As soon as cannabis is legalized nationwide (December 1st and you heard it here first) they will remove all the "cagey" bits of their website.

Ricky, those cookies look delicious – and I do believe I see a bite missing from the top right cookie – was that the Cookie Monster? Er, I mean, was that you?! LOL! Frankly, I can’t stop at one cookie, so I’d have been on my behind after 5 of those!

Last time I saw my doc I reported I was experiencing an increase in my RSD type II pain but still wanted to avoid pain med’s (Annie is all to familiar with this as one of her daughters also suffers from it). Doc told me to go to a local shop which sells CBD Broad Spectrum Hemp oil, purchase the strongest, and try it. It’s sourced locally and tested every 2 weeks. I now take 1000 mg, half a dropper full every 3 hours for a 60% reduction in pain (that’s unheard of for RSD Type II). Takes 25-35 minutes for me to feel pain reduction. I was skeptical initially. It does make me sleepy, so I can’t take it regularly. Doc said mass marketed CBD oil is often poor quality and fairly useless. My doc also says when medical marijuana is legal here she’ll be first on board for her cancer and Parkinson’s patients (google Parkinson’s and mm, the benefits are amazing). Me? I couldn’t tolerate it. Balance problems. I have to be cautious with the CBD oil as it is. Wish I could tolerate it regularly as the pain relief is wonderful for me. I believe we all experience different levels of pain relief and side effects with any medication, prescription or OTC.

Not that anyone asked my opinion, but I believe there is a place for medical marijuana and it’s benefits to many people suffering from a great many disorders, but I also know of many who abuse it, sometimes with the aid of unethical doctors.

2md - Not a bite but a thumb print from me. If you are getting sleepy, whatever you are taking also has a bit of THC in it. If you want to minimize the THC effects, drink some orange juice with the medication. However, pain relief is not going to come from just CBDs. You need a bit of THC to make everything work.

It sounds to me like you are using or should be using Rick Simpson Oil or RSO as it's called. I will post a link to Rick Simpson's page at the bottom of this reply and you can read all about there. The one point he makes over and over again is that you MUST use a preparation that's made from Cannabis and NOT Hemp. You also should NEVER buy this online, it will be fake. If you live in a legal state, find a reputable source or make it yourself - there are explicit directions on Rick's website.

On the topic of RSO: this may very well be a cure for cancer. I am not at liberty to discuss details, but a very close friend of mine is fighting Stage 4 lung cancer with RSO and a pill called Tagrisso. Her most recent scans show that every single small tumor is gone in 6 months since she began treatment and the only one that remains is now half its size. Her oncologist said that he's never seen this much improvement so quickly.

Ricky, what I purchase is grown (sourced) and produced locally - very close to where I live and here in TN. After reading your comment, I looked up Broad or Full Spectrum and this is what I found:

"Full Spectrum CBD Oil. Full Spectrum generally refers to CBD oil products that not only contain CBD,but also contain some terpenes and other cannabinoids such as CBG, CBN and even some THC. ... When seeking out Full Spectrum products, you may come across some called “Broad Spectrum” that claim to have 0% THC."

I suspect there might be a little THC in it, as it does make me drowsy, but then again, due to my balance disorder (unrelated to RSD) I'm intolerant of many med's effects. Can't even take melatonin without serious issues the next day.

No, we aren't a legal state, for now. I wouldn't and couldn't purchase or use cannabis for that reason. I stay legal : )

I know people who've tried the edibles and a very little goes a long way. Some hated it, and gave it back, others have 1/6 of a cookie to alleviate pain.

Hubby and have taken the oil to help with the stress and help us sleep. Neither of us can sleep thru the night. He doesn't have pain associated with his cancer, but there's huge stress and the unknown.

I hadn't taken the oil in a number of weeks.....it tastes like a pine tree and I don't like it, I usually put it in juice or milk. So I put some in my drink, and I was watching tv with hubby and the room started to spin and I felt all weird. I didn't know if I was having a heart attack or what. When I went to bed, I had to hold onto the walls all the way down the hall, and laying in bed my thoughts were racing, and I thought I was going crazy. Then it dawned on my that it was the oil. Boy if this is what people want, when they take marijuana (or any drug), they're nuts. They can have it, it's not for me.

As Ann said, we're getting it in Oct. Families are allowed to grow 4 plants on their property. I have no idea how any of this is going to be regulated. Are they going to search inside and outside the houses and count the plants? We're having government stores sell it, like our provincial liquor stores. Currently we can buy marijuana for medical reasons, but it's sold online, and delivered by Canada Post, UPS etc.

Jasdip - your experience is very common. Trust me, it's happened to me twice. It's weird, it's uncomfortable, you find yourself holding onto the sides of the bed for dear life. But you get over it and there are no long term effects other than a serious case of the munchies, which is one of the reasons we're all here in the first place.

As far as plant counts and regulation go...

We're allowed 6 per adult by law. Because of my cancer, I can get an increase to 24 plants if necessary. How do they check if you're growing a lot of plants? Easy - your electric bill. Don't think that the power company isn't going to report a sudden and sustained spike in your electric usage. Just on raw dollars - it costs an extra $200 a month to grow 6 plants.

Beyond that, unless you know what you're doing and you have to grow your own because you're not yet in a legal state, buy your ganja at a dispensary.

Oh and to eliminate that horrible taste of the oil, buy some empty gel caps at your local health food store and fill them with the oil. That way you won't ever taste it until you burp.

I don't know much at all about the topic, but I do remember reading that pot, probably the THC, takes more than 24 hours to get out of your system. Certainly a couple of once a week recreational users that I know seem to have no drive half the time and are kind of permanently mellow.

If it's true that it takes so long to fully clear your system and that it can build up with daily use, and if that applies the the medicinally significant parts, do you think it would be possible to someone who doesn't tolerate the suggested dose, like Jasdip, to start with smaller doses and work it up, so a full does becomes okay over time? I've had pharmacological pain relievers that were like that...

Here's a random question-- So say you're finally finding relief using the oil, can you travel with it in the country or even overseas? I suppose you could fill gel caps... but is it advisable?

plllog - Yes, that's exactly the medical protocol. If you are fighting a newly diagnosed cancer and intend to use RSO in conjunction with whatever medical treatment your doctor recommends, your goal is to intake 60 grams of RSO in 90 days. You start out at 50 to 100mg a day, which will knock you on your back, so most patients take it at night and have a groggy morning. The goal is 1000mg or 1 gram per day. There's no getting around it, it will wipe you out if you don't follow the protocol, but if you do, your tolerance builds in just a few weeks.

Compumom - No, you cannot legally travel with it outside the borders of your legal state. That being said, most sealed medical preparations you buy at a dispensary are undetectable by any means at an airport other than visual inspection. TSA is not looking for your RSO capsules, they're more concerned about the next nut case with a bomb in his shoe... like that'll ever happen again, said the barefoot traveler.
